Workforce Legislation
State Representative Alex Dallman recently joined several of his Assembly colleagues to announce a bill package that will work to address a stronger workforce. The state lawmaker from Green Lake is the lead author of one of the bills, which would relate to the amount of benefits received under unemployment insurance. The bill would determine the maximum weeks of eligibility for individuals based upon the current unemployment rate. Benefit weeks would max out at 26. Dallman says he’s talked with many businesses around the district and the incentive to get back to work is extremely low, yet the demand for workers is incredibly high. He says similar legislation has worked out well for other states.

Youth Apprenticeship
The coordinator for the Youth Apprenticeship program for Envision Greater Fond du Lac says the program has something to offer both youths and employers. Lisa McArthur is the Director of Economic and Workforce Outreach for Envision. She says employers have to pay the students at least minimum wage and employ them a minimum of 450 hours throughout the year. McArthur says that is quite easy to reach if a student works 200 hours during a summer. She says employers do have to be a little more flexible during the school year to allow students to have school experiences like attending prom, homecoming or participate to in extracurriculars like sports. She invites employers that would like to know more about the Youth Apprenticeship program to go to Department of Workforce Development’s website for more information.

About 40 kids participated in the first in a series of programs offered through a partnership of the Town Square Community Center in Green Lake and the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area last month. The Center on Friday, January 21st hosted “Kids Behaving Badly,” which kicked off the free monthly Cabin Fever Kids Series. Amelia Compton Wolff of Town Square says the program will be offered once a month through April with a different theme each month. She says the first program allowed kids to do things their parents wouldn’t generally let them get away with like fort building, toilet papering a room, and coloring on walls. So how do you top that? Compton Wolff says on Friday, February 18th they will offer “Area 51 Adventures,” which plays off a space theme.
