The Winter Olympics kicked off Friday in Beijing, China. Opening ceremonies were held this morning. The Olympics run until February 20th.
In the NBA the Milwaukee Bucks are off until Saturday night when they play at Portland against the Trail Blazers. Milwaukee (31-21) is tied with the 76ers for second place in the Eastern Conference, just a game behind the first-place Bulls and the Heat.
Khris Middleton is joining Giannis Antetokounmpo at this year’s NBA All-Star Game. The league announced Thursday night that the Milwaukee Bucks forward was selected to the game as a reserve. The reserves were selected by NBA head coaches. The selection is the third of Middleton’s career. His previous ones came in 2019 and 2020. Middleton enters Thursday averaging 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game this season. He’s shooting 44.1% from the field, 38.2% from three and 88.3% from the free-throw line.
Middleton’s selection comes a week after teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo was selected. The Greek Freak was named a starter for the sixth time in his career.
In men’s college basketball Saturday, Penn State (9-9) plays at number 11 Wisconsin (17-3) The Badgers are coming off a road loss to Illinois 80-67 Wednesday night. Tipoff is at 5:00.
Elsewhere in men’s college basketball Saturday, Ripon College is at Lawrence University with the tipoff at 1:00.
Also Saturday UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-Stout with the tipoff at 5:00.
The Wisconsin women’s basketball team is home Sunday, hosting Illinois, with the tipoff at 1:00.
Elsewhere in women’s college basketball Saturday, Ripon College plays at the University of Lawrence with the tipoff at 3:00.
Also Saturday the UW-Oshkosh women play at UW-Stout with the tipoff at 3:00.
The AFC meets the NFC Sunday afternoon in the Pro Bowl at Las Vegas. Kickoff is 2:00.
The Jaguars’ long coaching search has finally come to an end — and it marks a new beginning for Doug Pederson.
Jacksonville has agreed in principle with the former Eagles coach and Super Bowl champion as its new head coach, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The decision, which the Jags later confirmed Thursday night, comes seven weeks after Urban Meyer was fired amid a turbulent, and abbreviated, first season. The 54-year-old Pederson is coming off a gap year, following a successful five-year stint in Philadelphia.
Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder denied allegations made against him during a congressional roundtable in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, including a new allegation of workplace misconduct by a former team employee.
During the roundtable discussion, Tiffani Johnston, who worked for the team for eight years starting in 2002 as a cheerleader and marketing manager, said Snyder placed his hand on her thigh without her consent at a team dinner, and that he pushed her toward his limousine with his hand on her lower back. She had not previously disclosed those allegations to the media or investigators.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., the chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, read from a letter by another former team employee, Jason Friedman, corroborating Johnston’s account.
In response to the allegations made during the roundtable, Snyder issued a statement apologizing for “misconduct” that previously took place within his organization but said any allegations “leveled against me personally” were “outright lies.”
The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Lakeland Magic 134-115. The Herd scored 40 points in the second quarter to lead 67-62 at halftime. The Magic scored 72 points in the second half while the Herd scored 48 points. Rayjon Tucker led the Herd with 31 points and six rebounds while Jalen Lecque added 23 points. Tremont Waters followed with 21 points.
Admiral Schofield led the Magic with 27 points while three players added 16 points. The Wisconsin Herd will play at the Greensboro Swarm on Friday, February 4 with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
Caitlin Clark collected her fifth triple-double this season and No. 21 Iowa rolled by Wisconsin 84-50 on Thursday night. Clark, who leads the nation in points and assists per game, finished with 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting with 11 assists and 11 rebounds. Monika Czinano added 17 points, freshman Addison O’Grady had a career-high 16 and Kate Martin 10 for the Hawkeyes (15-5, 9-2), who shot 59% in dominating the stat sheet. Julie Pospisilova and Krustyna Ellew scored 13 points each and Brooke Schramek added 10 for the Badgers (5-16, 2-9), who shot 32%.
Iowa was coming off 92-88 loss to No. 23 Ohio State on Monday that snapped a seven-game wining streak. The Badgers have lost three straight. Iowa is at No. 6 Michigan on Sunday. Wisconsin is host to Illinois on Sunday.
Back on their home floor for the first time in 45 days, the Green Bay women needed extra time to earn a big conference win over Youngstown State. Reigning Horizon League Player of the Week Hailey Oskey once again led the Phoenix with 14 points against the Penguins. Appleton North grad Sydney Levy chipped in 12 points off the bench for Green Bay. Four of those points were critical to the Phoenix’s victory, with a pair of free throws to send the game to overtime with nine seconds left and then another set of free throws to secure the 70-69 victory in double overtime. Luxemburg-Casco alum Cassie Schiltz also had a big impact for the Phoenix on Thursday night with 13 points and six rebounds.
Green Bay has two more home games over the next week with Robert Morris visiting the Kress on Saturday, and in-state rival Milwaukee coming to town on Monday night.
