Kofi Cockburn had 37 points and 12 rebounds and No. 18 Illinois beat No. 11 Wisconsin 80-67 on Wednesday night. Cockburn had 20 first-half points on 10-of-12 shooting, including two rim-rattling dunks. He finished 16 of 19, making his last five shots for the Illini (16-5, 9-2 Big Ten). Jacob Grandison added 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Illinois. He was 3 of 6 from 3-point range, a significant improvement after going 1 of 10 from 3 in wins over Michigan State and Northwestern.Wisconsin matched up a pair of 7-footers, Steven Crowl and Chris Vogt, with Cockburn, but they were unable to limit his impact.
Johnny Davis led Wisconsin (17-4, 8-3) with 22 points and 15 rebounds.
Illinois took a 42-38 lead into halftime after shooting 19 of 34 from the field in the first half. The Illini opened the second half on a 12-4 run, including a 3 from Alfonso Plummer that made it 51-40. Wisconsin hosts Penn State on Saturday.
The 5th ranked UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team upset 2nd ranked UW-Platteville 65-51 in a WIAC conference game at the Kolf Sports Center. The Titans had three players in double figures, led by Eddie Muench’s 19 points, while Levi Borchert had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Cole Booth added 12 off the bench for Oshkosh. They shot 47.1% from the field and 43.5% from three in the victory. Oshkosh has given Platteville its only two losses on the season.
On the women’s side, UW-Oshkosh won at UW-Platteville Wednesday night 59-47. Leah Porath led the Titans with 20 points and Nikki Arneson added 11.
For the first time in more than 20 years, the Northwoods League baseball team based in Wausau will be known by its city. As part of a rebrand, the Wisconsin Woodchucks are now known as the WauThe Woodchucks took the name “Wisconsin” in 1999, when they were the state’s only team in the league. Currently, the Northwoods League includes the Green Bay Rockers, Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, and teams in Eau Claire, La Crosse, Kenosha, Mequon, Madison and Wisconsin Rapids.sau Woodchucks. The Packers and Matt LaFleur are losing another offensive assistant coach. Tight ends coach Justin Outten is leaving Green Bay to join Nathaniel Hackett in Denver to be his offensive coordinator. This move has been in the works since Hackett came up empty on Luke Getsy, who went to Chicago to be the Bears offensive coordinator, and Adam Stenavich, who was promoted to the OC position in Green Bay. Outten began his NFL coaching career as an offensive intern in Atlanta in 2016, on the same staff as LaFleur. He was an offensive assistant with the Falcons in 2017 and 2018, before joining LaFleur’s staff in Green Bay in 2019. Outten helped develop the undrafted Bobby Tonyan, who tied the franchise record for touchdown receptions by a tight end in 2020 with 11.
Multiple media outlets reported that Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell will be the Vikings’ new head coach. He is currently preparing for the Super Bowl, where the Rams will face the Cincinnati Bengals on Feb. 13, and can’t be officially named to the job yet. Jim Harbaugh is staying at Michigan. After interviewing for the head-coaching job of the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, Harbaugh informed school officials that he will be back in Ann Arbor for the 2022 season, ESPN is reporting.
John Shuster will become the first curler to carry the American flag in an Olympic opening ceremony. The defending gold medalist and five-time Olympian was elected by his fellow American athletes to lead the United States into the Bird’s Nest on Friday along with Brittany Bowe. Bowe, a three-time Olympian, was the first runner-up and will walk in place of bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor, who tested positive for COVID-19.
The announcement of the flag bearers came shortly after competition at the Beijing Olympics began Wednesday with the opening games of mixed doubles curling at the Ice Cube, the reconfigured venue where Michael Phelps won a record eight swimming gold medals at the Summer Olympics 14 years ago.
Shuster, who is from Superior, and the other members of the men’s team were in Los Angeles and are due in Beijing early Friday. Shuster won bronze in 2006 — the first-ever U.S. Olympic curling medal — as the lead for Pete Fenson’s team. The men’s competition starts next Wednesday.
