Fatal Fire In Sturgeon Bay
Police in Sturgeon Bay say a body was found in the rubble of Butch’s Bar following a fire. Identification of that person is still pending. Searchers are still looking for another person who is unaccounted for but police say the integrity of the structure is compromised making it difficult to search further. Fire engulfed the building at 112 South 3rd Avenue early Tuesday morning. There are 20 rental units above the bar, but only nine were being rented at the time of the blaze. Some of the tenants were able to escape before the roof collapsed. One renter was transported to a burn center. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Hein Park Playground Equipment Update
The Markesan Police Department recently posted an update on the Hein Park New Playground Fundraiser. Chief Will Pflum says they’ve gotten contributions totaling $38,779. He says they recently received a donation of a grant from the Green Lake Basic Needs Foundation that helped them get closer to their goal. However, due to the increased cost in supplies and such the total needed is just over $50,000 to make the playground a reality. So they need to raise $11,000 more to reach their goal. Anyone wishing to make a donation can stop by the Markesan City Hall or send it to the Markesan City Hall, PO Box 352, Markesan, WI 53946. Pflum says they hope to have the new playground area landscaped and a large portion of the new playground equipment in place by June for June Dairy Days.
Winter Driving
Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Bill Tadych says they got about 8 to 10 reports of cars in the ditch during the overnight shift or early Tuesday morning. An icy-glaze and snow led to slippery conditions. Tadych says a lot of times a vehicle goes into a ditch because they are trying to pass someone when weather conditions dictate slower speeds. He recommends carrying an emergency kit in your car no matter what time of year it is in case you become stranded if you do go off the road. Include a blanket, some energy food, and deicer or road salt in the winter in case you become stuck. He says if you do go off the road call their non-emergency number at 920-929-3390, but don’t be afraid to call 9-1-1 either.

Marriage Penalty
Congressman Glenn Grothman says under the Biden Administration a proliferation of programs offering benefits to the unemployed and on low-income further promote the marriage penalty on taxes. He says that unfair tax advantage has grown steadily since President Johnson’s administration. But the federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says President Biden’s Build Back Better Bill and other actions offered even more programs that enhance benefits while also providing disincentives for getting married and living on a single-family income.
Doc Returns To EAA
Doc, one of two airworthy Boeing B-29s in the world, will be returning to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2022 for air show appearances and static displays during the week. While the exact appearance schedule is still being finalized, the aircraft will be parked on Boeing Plaza for public view when on the AirVenture grounds. The World War II-era bomber will help commemorate the U.S. Air Force’s 75th anniversary at Oshkosh this year. AirVenture will feature aircraft from throughout the Air Force’s history, from its creation out of the Army Air Forces in 1947 to today’s modern military aircraft. Doc was rescued from the Mojave Desert in 1987 and was meticulously restored over a 30-year period. It made its first air show appearances in 2017, including a legendary flight at Oshkosh that year with the Commemorative Air Force’s B-29 FIFI, marking the first time two B-29s had flown together in formation in approximately 60 years.
Sturgeon Season Day 11
Day 11 of the sturgeon spearing season was another slow one on Lake Winnebago with only 17 fish harvested. The icy and rainy conditions most likely resulted in few spearers, while the overcast skies likely decreased visibility, further inhibiting harvest. Only one juvenile female was harvested, but spearers also brought in six adult females and 10 males. The Stockbridge registration station had the highest harvest with seven fish registered. The largest fish (pictured) was registered at the Grundman Lane registration station and it was taken by Mark Kanitz. The female sturgeon weighed 141.2 pounds and measured 78.8 inches in length. There are five days left in the season.
