22 February 2022 Sports

Sports for Tuesday

The football world is waiting. What will Aaron Rodgers do?  The answer is still not clear, but Rodgers posted to Instagram Monday night thanking several people close to him, including Shailene Woodley, the Green Bay quarterback room and other Packers. He called the post “#MondayNightGratitude”.

Rodgers has previously said he will make a decision before free agency, which begins March 16th.  Tuesday, Feb. 22 marks the first day teams can franchise a player. Davante Adams would be eligible for that, which may factor into Rodgers’ decision.

The full post reads:

“Here’s some… #MondayNightGratitude for some of the incredibly special people in my life, with some pictures from the last beautiful year.@shailenewoodley, thanks for letting me chase after you the first couple months after we met, and finally letting me catch up to you and be a part of your life. Thanks for always having my back, for the incredible kindness you show me and everyone you meet, and for showing me what unconditional love looks like, I love you and am grateful for you.

To the men I got to share the QB room with everyday, Matt, Nathaniel, Luke, @jordan3love and @kurtbenkert , you guys made every day so much fun and I’m so thankful for the daily laughs and stress relief you brought me every week of the year. I love you guys.

To the Friday Crew, @aiydacobb , @rcobb18 , @frankieshebby , and @davidbakhtiari , I loved every moment we got to spend together this year. Your love and support was overwhelming, and I cherish the friendships I have with each of you.

To my teammates, past and current, you are the icing on the beautiful cake we call our job; football. the friendships that we have will transcend our collective time in this game and I am so thankful for the role that each of you have played in making my life that much better. I love you guys, and cherish the memories we’ve made.

To everyone else, Spread love and gratitude you beautiful people, and read a book once in a while too while you’re at it. Love and peace ❤️❤️”

Michigan men’s basketball head coach Juwan Howard will be suspended for five games, through the end of the regular season, after he tried to throw a punch at a Wisconsin assistant coach.  In a statement from the Big Ten Conference, it stated Howard would be suspended and fined $40,000. The conference said the postgame altercation was a “clear violation of the Big Ten Conference’s Sportsmanship Policy” by Howard and Wisconsin Basketball Head Coach Greg Gard.   Gard will be fined $10,000 as a result, which UW Athletics Director of Athletics Chris McIntosh noted in an update Tuesday night that they would be covering.

“I consider the $10,000 fine from the Big Ten to be a ‘Wisconsin fine’ and not a ‘Greg Gard’ fine,” McIntosh said. “Wisconsin Athletics will assume the responsibility of paying the fine.”

McIntosh also supported the Badgers in the events and said there were no ill intentions.

“Neither Coach Gard nor his staff had any intent to provoke or incite any of what took place,” McIntosh said. “I want to commend those on our staff — and student-athletes — who were trying to de-escalate the situation.”

Michigan athletes Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabate will each be suspended for one game. Wisconsin guard Jahcobi Neath will also be suspended for one game.

Howard is expected to be back for the Big Ten tournament, which begins March 9 in Indianapolis. Howard released a statement Monday night, apologizing for his actions.

“After taking time to reflect on all that happened, I realize how unacceptable both my actions and words were, and how they affected so many,” Howard said. “I am truly sorry.”

Gonzaga remained at No. 1 for the second straight week, receiving all 61 votes from a media panel in the poll released Monday. Arizona moved up a spot to No. 2 for its highest ranking in four years, with Auburn, Purdue and Kansas rounding out the top five.

No. 18 Arkansas had the biggest jump of the week, moving up five spots after blowing out Missouri and shutting down No. 17 Tennessee. UConn was next, climbing three spots to No. 21 with wins over Seton Hall and Xavier. No. 13 Wisconsin moved up two spots after beating Indians and Michigan.

No. 22 Ohio State had the biggest drop of teams still in the poll, falling four spots after losing to Iowa. No. 10 Baylor, No. 11 Providence and No. 15 Illinois all lost three spots.

No. 23 Saint Mary’s returned to the poll after a one-week absence following wins over San Francisco and BYU. No. 25 Iowa is ranked for the first time this season following its win over Ohio State.  Michigan State dropped out of the poll from No. 19 with losses to Penn State and Illinois. The Spartans, ranked in the top 10 earlier this season, have lost four of five. Wyoming’s first stint in the AP Top 25 since 2015 didn’t last long. The Cowboys fell out from No. 22 after splitting against New Mexico and Air Force last week.

The Minnesota Vikings have hired former Packers outsider linebackers coach, Mike Smith. Smith will join the Vikings as an outside linebackers coach and pass rush specialist. Smith was with the Packers for three seasons. Reports came out last week that he was leaving to pursue other opportunities. He joins former Packers defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine who was recently hired by Minnesota as an assistant head coach.

Jenna Jorgensen had 14 points and Leah Porath chipped in 13 as the Titans defeated the UW-La Crosse Eagles, 65-50.  UW-Oshkosh will now play at UW-Whitewater on Wednesday in the WIAC Tournament semifinals. The Titans are 1-1 this year against the Warhawks.

Five hours in the boardroom on Monday — sometimes together, sometimes in their own caucus — didn’t equate to major progress between MLB and the MLB Players Association as the sides remain far apart on a new collective bargaining agreement, sources told ESPN.

In the offices overlooking the spring field where the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins train, leadership from both sides began what is an important week of negotiations in order to preserve Opening Day on March 31.

Already, the start of spring training has been delayed with games postponed until at least March 5 as the owners continue to impose a lockout on players.

On Monday, the league increased its commitment in a pre-arbitration pool to $20 million — an increase of $5 million since its last offer — while adding another team to the lottery in its new NBA-style draft proposal. The moves were consistent with the incremental adjustments both sides have made throughout the months of negotiations.

Also on Monday, MLB withdrew its request of the union to control — and potentially reduce — the number of minor league playing jobs, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The league could try to do it unilaterally going forward, but it won’t do so in 2022 and at the moment does not have plans to pursue it in 2023. Along with the withdrawal of the minor league playing jobs proposal, MLB pulled its offer limiting the number of times a player can be optioned to five. The constant shuttling between the big leagues and Triple-A is a quality-of-life issue for players, who have proposed a maximum of four options.

Major economic issues, including the competitive balance tax, minimum salaries and revenue sharing, weren’t addressed in a meaningful way on Monday, according to sources familiar with the talks.
