Three From Wisconsin Involved In Fatal Minnesota Traffic Crash

A pickup truck traveling the wrong way on a Minnesota highway Saturday hit another vehicle killing a passenger from Stevens Point and injuring two Oshkosh residents in that car. The Minnesota State Patrol says 20-year-old Alice Goman was injured in the crash on Highway 61 and was taken to a hospital where she died. Twenty-one-year-old Nicholas Lemmerond was driving south on the highway and 22-year-old Natalie Carlson was another passenger in his vehicle. Both of them are from Oshkosh and both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Thirty-five-year-old Adam Anderson of Winona was arrested for driving while impaired and criminal vehicular operation. Goman was a sophomore at Winona State University.

Vehicle Break Ins Reported In Northeastern FDL County

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to lock their vehicles at night and remove valuables. The department says there have been a string of vehicle break-ins primarily in the Northeast portion of the county around the Mt. Calvary area. All of the incidents have occurred during the overnight hours. Any residents who may have camera footage of recent suspicious activity or attempted break-ins, is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 920-929-3390 or you can remain anonymous and report your tip to 920-906-4777.

Scam Averted

Detectives with the Fond du Lac Police Department and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, working with the UPS Store in Fond du Lac, ended up saving an elderly resident over $22,000. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says a UPS employee had some concerns when an elderly resident from the Waupun area brought a parcel package into the store for shipping and alerted the UPS distribution center and notified Fond du Lac Police.  Police Detective Vance Henning in turn contacted the Sheriff’s Office because of where the resident lived. Sheriff’s detectives Eric Muellenbach and David Olig met with the elderly resident and determined that resident was being scammed into sending the package to California. The package contained $22,560 in cash and it was returned to the rightful owner.  Waldschmidt commended the UPS store employee and detectives for their actions.

Making Improvements In Downtown Ripon

Ripon Main Street Executive Director Craig Tebon says county sales tax money the city has allocated to the downtown for improvements will help in turn generate more sales tax for the city. Last month the Ripon Common Council approved putting the $51,333 it had received from Fond du Lac County toward improvements.  In addition Ripon Main Street will be adding about $13,000. Some of those improvements include wayfinding signage such as banners, parking and directional signage. Streetscape improvements would include flower planters, bench replacement, replacement of trash and recycling containers, and decorative signposts. Tebon says thousands of vehicles drive right past the downtown business district a day not realizing it is there so the signage would definitely help. Amenities like bike racks and installation of a downtown WIFI system are also planned.

Worker Relocation Incentive Program Picking Up Interest

Interest in Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s Worker Relocation Incentive Program is building. The program allows participating employers to offer up to $15,000 to prospective employees to relocate to Fond du Lac County to work for them with the program paying half of the incentive if they live and work in the county for at least a year. Envision CEO and President Sadie Parafiniuk says it was slow going at first, but the number of participating employers has picked up increasing to 14. About $100,000 is allocated for those 14 businesses in the program. They have about $300,000 allocated for the program so there is room for more employers whether they are businesses, industries, municipalities or nonprofits that would be interested in participating.  For more information call Envision at 920-921-9500 or visit their website.

WinterFest Coming Up In Green Lake Saturday

Green Lake’s WinterFest comes up this Saturday. Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Meier says they were going through some stuff at the office one-day and came across a photo album about the “Trout Derby” from back in the 1970’s. That fostered an idea, which led to the relaunching of “Winterfest.” Allison Gohlke is the Marketing and Event Coordinator for the Chamber. She has taken the reins on the “Trout Derby Fisheree.”  There is a $10 entry fee for the event, which she says will have some great prizes for those participating. In addition there will be beer and food, Horse-Drawn Wagon Rides, a Cornhole Tournament, Kids Pond Hockey, live music from Vitamin R, and more. You can find out more at the Chamber’s website Visit Green Lake.com under their events section.

Jackson Goldapske DNR photo.

Only 22 sturgeon were harvested on Lake Winnebago Monday, the lowest amount of the season. That brought the total fish harvested on the big lake to 128 juvenile females, 414 adult females and 354 males or a total of 896 fish. On Day 10 of the season Jackson Goldapske speared the largest fish (pictured), a 123 pound female that measured 74.5 inches long. It was registered at the Black Wolf registration station. The DNR says Black Wolf leads all registrations stations with 20 fish harvested over 100 pounds. So far, the total number of fish harvested over 100 pounds on Lake Winnebago is 61 fish.
