Super Bowl 56 is history and the Los Angeles Rams are the champs. It took a precise 79-yard drive capped by Cooper Kupp’s 1-yard touchdown reception with 1:25 remaining for a 23-20 victory Sunday over the Cincinnati Bengals to give the Rams their first NFL title since the 1999 season — and their first representing Los Angeles since 1951. They did so in their home, the $5 billion SoFi Stadium, making the Rams the second consecutive host to win the championship after Tampa Bay became the first a year ago.
The winning series, during which game MVP Kupp’s 4-yard touchdown reception from Matthew Stafford was negated by offsetting penalties, ended soon after with the NFL Offensive Player of the Year easily beating Eli Apple in the right corner of the end zone for the winning score. Kupp had four receptions for 39 yards, and a 7-yard run on fourth-and-1 from the Rams 30 on the championship drive. Cincinnati was penalized the second-fewest times (72) for the fewest yards (620) in the regular season but flags on three consecutive plays hurt badly — including interference on Kupp in the end zone.
Even with that brilliant, decisive march to the Lombardi Trophy, it was LA’s “fearsome fivesome” that made the difference. Led by Aaron Donald and Von Miller, they sacked Joe Burrow a Super Bowl record-tying seven times, shutting down Cincinnati’s offense after the Bengals took the lead and then added to it with a field goal during a 22-second spurt to start the second half. Fittingly, Burrow was under pressure on fourth-and-1 and threw incomplete, setting off a football fiesta this city has not seen since the LA Raiders won the 1983 championship.
Kupp even earned the MVP honor despite often being double-teamed after fellow wideout Odell Beckham Jr. — who had a touchdown catch on Los Angeles’ second drive for the game’s first score — went out with a knee injury in the second period. Kupp finished with eight receptions for 92 yards.
The Rams scored first on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to Odell Beckham Jr to lead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored in the second quarter as Burrow threw a four-yard touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon and Stafford hit Kupp for an 11-yard score. The snap on the extra point attempt was fumbled and the Rams led at the half 13-10. Burrow hit wide receiver Tyler Huggins on a 75-yard bomb to open the third quarter and Cincinnati added a 38-yard field goal by rookie Erin McPherson. The Rams Matt Gay kicked a 41-yard field goal and the Bengals led 20-16 at the end of three quarters. The Rams then went ahead on Stafford’s one-yard pass to Kupp and then LA’s defense took over and held on for the win.
Rutgers understands it must prove it can beat quality teams on the road to get back into consideration for the NCAA Tournament. The Scarlet Knights took a giant step in that direction Saturday by winning at Wisconsin for the first time and posting their third straight victory over a ranked opponent. Ron Harper Jr. scored 21 points and Rutgers went on a late 11-0 run in a 73-65 victory over the 14th-ranked Badgers..
Johnny Davis scored 11 points — nearly 10 below his season average — while getting hounded by Rutgers’ Caleb McConnell, who matched a career high with six steals. Tyler Wahl led Wisconsin with a career-high 23 points and Steven Crowl added 12 Wisconsin (19-5, 10-4) dropped a half-game behind No. 13 Illinois (17-6, 10-3) in the Big Ten standings. The Badgers play at Indiana on Tuesday.
A replacement game for a previously canceled Wisconsin Badgers contest has been called off. Wisconsin announced that its game against George Mason, scheduled for Thursday night at the Kohl Center, has been canceled because of COVID-19 cases in the Badgers program. A game was originally scheduled for Thursday night against Morgan State. However, Morgan State told Wisconsin earlier this week it could not travel because of positive COVID-19 tests. The Badgers are scheduled to play next Wednesday against Illinois State.
Donovan Newby came off the bench to score 17 points to carry Milwaukee to a 54-44 win over Green Bay on Sunday. DeAndre Gholston had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers (9-18, 7-11 Horizon League). Moses Bol blocked five shots. The Phoenix’s 26.0 field goal percentage represented the worst mark by a Milwaukee opponent this season. Milwaukee totaled 17 points in the first half, a season low for the team. Cade Meyer had 18 points and seven rebounds to pace the Phoenix (4-21, 3-13), who have now lost eight straight games. Nate Jenkins added 15 points. The Panthers improve to 2-0 against the Phoenix for the season. Milwaukee defeated Green Bay 63-49 on Jan. 5
It was a hero’s welcome back home for Iron River’s Nick Baumgartner. Family and friends welcomed him back from the Beijing at Austin Straubel Airport. Baumgartner, the oldest Olympian at the games at 40 years old, won a gold medal in team snocross, his first medal in Olympic competition. Baumgartner says he is not ready to commit to four more years of Olympic training but is going to compete in the World Championships next year in Bakuriani, Georgia.
The U.S. has won 15 medals at the Olympics in Beijing. The team has seven golds, six silver and two bronze. Norway leads in gold medals with nine and total medals with 21. Russia is second with 18 medals and the U.S. and Canada are tied for third with 15-each.
On the men’s PGA tour Scottie Scheffler won in a playoff over Patrick Cantlay to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open Sunday. Each shot a final round 67. Three golfers tied for third including last year’s champ Brooks Koepka.

The Bucks are back in action Monday (tonight) hosting the Portland Trail Blazers. Milwaukee is coming off a 131-107 loss at Phoenix, the team with the best record in the league, Thursday night. The Bucks come into the game at 35-22 and tied with Cleveland for third-place in the Eastern Confernce, two games behind the first-place Miami Heat.
Bryce Golden scored a career-high 22 points, Bo Hodges posted a double-double and Aaron Thompson broke the school’s career-assist record as the Butler Bulldogs held off No. 18 Marquette 85-79. Butler opened the game by making 6 of 8 from 3-point range and finished with a season-high 13 from beyond the arc. Golden, Hodges and Thompson routinely won the battle to loose balls and rebounds, and the surprising Golden Eagles couldn’t keep up. As a result, the Bulldogs (12-13, 5-9 Big East) snapped a three-game losing streak and earned its first win over a ranked team in nine tries this season. While Justin Lewis led Marquette with 27 points and nine rebounds and Tyler Kolek added 17 points, the Golden Eagles (16-9, 8-6) never led and never even had a chance to tie the score after Butler took a 10-5 lead. Marquette returns home to face Georgetown on Wednesday.
The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, beat NBA G League Ignite 103-93. The Herd doubled the Ignite score in the second quarter, 36-18, to lead 63-51 at the end of the first half. The Herd came within five points in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overthrow the Herd. Rayjon Tucker led the Herd with a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Wenyen Gabriel also added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
MarJon Beauchamp led Ignite with 21 points while Scoot Henderson added 17 points.
