Sports for January 4th

Men’s College Basketball (Mon.)

Wisconsin guard Johnny Davis was hungry Monday night. After skipping breakfast in the morning and spending the afternoon trying to figure out how to beat No. 3 Purdue on the road for the first time in nearly eight years, the Badgers found plenty of ways to feed their sophomore star. Davis scored a career-high 37 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and made most of the big shots to lead No. 23 Wisconsin past the third-ranked Boilermakers 74-69.

Davis repeatedly made the Boilermakers pay, too, by going 13 of 24 from the field, 2 of 5 on 3-pointers and 9 of 12 at the free-throw line. He also led the Badgers (11-2, 2-1 Big Ten) with two blocks and two steals.  Davis is the first Division I player to lead his team in all five categories in a road win over a top-five foe since Tim Duncan did it for Wake Forest against Maryland on Feb. 1, 1997. Davis had plenty of help from other Badgers, too: Brad Davison scored 15 points and made two crucial 3s in the final four minutes and coach Greg Gard took a page out of Purdue’s playbook by playing a physical, harassing style and winning inside.

Purdue (13-2, 1-2) lost for the first time since Dec. 9 and had a 13-game winning streak at Mackey Arena end. Zach Edey took advantage of his 7-foot-4 frame by scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Jaden Ivey added 14 points. It just wasn’t enough.

Wisconsin hosts Iowa on Thursday.

Wisconsin linebacker Leo Chenal is entering the NFL draft rather than returning to the Badgers next season. Chenal announced his decision Monday on social media  The move comes after Chenal earned second-team honors on the Associated Press All-America team as a junior. Chenal was the leading tackler for a Wisconsin defense that allowed the fewest yards per game of any Football Bowl Subdivision team this season.

Wisconsin (9-4) closed its season Thursday by beating Arizona State 20-13 in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Saddiq Bey scored a career-high 34 points and the Detroit Pistons beat Milwaukee 115-106 on Monday night to snap the Bucks’ six-game winning streak. Detroit owns the NBA’s worst record (7-28) but beat the reigning NBA champions and ended its recent futility in this series by getting a boost from the return of several players who had missed multiple games due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols. Milwaukee had won 12 consecutive regular-season matchups with the Pistons by an average margin of 16.7 points before Monday. That streak didn’t include the Bucks’ four-game sweep of Detroit in a 2019 first-round playoff series.

The Bucks lost despite having their top three players – Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday – all available. This marked just the third time all season that the Bucks have lost when they’ve had all three of those players in the starting lineup. Milwaukee threatened to erase a 13-point deficit in the final two minutes. But after Holiday’s 3-pointer narrowed the margin to five with 47.1 seconds left, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham converted a putback of his own miss with 27.8 seconds remaining. The Bucks wouldn’t threaten again.

Josh Jackson scored 24 points, Cunningham had 19 and Trey Lyles added 11 as all three Pistons came back from health and safety protocols. Killian Hayes, Saben Lee and Rodney McGruder also were back from protocols. Hamidou Diallo added 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Pistons.

Antetokounmpo had 31 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Holiday scored 29. Bobby Portis had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Middleton added 10 points.  Milwaukee shot just 11 of 46 on 3-point attempts.  The Bucks host the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. The Bucks lost 97-93 at Toronto on Dec. 2.

The Packers are off today after Sunday’s convincing 37-10 home victory over the Minnesota Vikings that clinched the number one seed in the NFC going into the playoffs.  Green Bay is at Detroit Sunday in the regular season finale.  The question now is, will the starters play against the Lions.  Head coach Matt LaFleur addressed the issue Monday, saying he plans to play the starters at least for awhile.  He says he doesn’t to rest them for what would be nearly three weeks before their first playoff game.

In other team news, the Packers have added offensive lineman Dennis Kelly, safety Darnell Savage and wide receiver David Moore to the reserve/COVID-19 list. In addition, the Packers have released kicker Elliott Fry from the practice squad.

In Monday Night Football quarterback Ben Roehlisberger likely won his last game home game in Pittsburgh as the Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns 26-14 and kept their playoff hopes alive. After  a scoreless first quarter the Steelers put 10 points on the board to lead 10-0 at the half. It was 13-7 at the end of three quarters.  On the night, Big Ben was 24-46 for just 123 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Nagee Harris led the rushing attack with 188 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled most of the night, completing 16 of 38 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Nick Chubb ram for 58 yards on 12 carries.  Pittsburgh improved to 8-7-1 while Cleveland fell to to 7-9.
