13 January 2022 Sports

Sports for January 13th

Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith is practicing again, raising hopes the 2020 Pro Bowl selection could return for the playoffs after missing nearly the entire regular season. Smith, who recorded a combined 26 sacks for the Packers from 2019-20, participated in the Packers’ practice Wednesday as they begin postseason preparations. The Packers (13-4) own the NFC’s No. 1 seed and lone first-round playoff bye, so they won’t play until Jan. 22 or 23. Smith hasn’t played since the season opener due to a back issue. He was on the field for just 18 snaps during that opening game, a 38-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints.  That followed a 2020 season in which he earned second-team honors in the All-Pro voting.  Matt LaFleur didn’t reveal how the Packers might utilize Smith in the playoffs. LaFleur noted that Smith hasn’t gotten many opportunities to work with first-year defensive coordinator Joe Barry’s scheme.  Smith practiced just one day during training camp.

In other injury news, quarterback Aaron Rodgers said the toe that was bothering him for much of the second half of the season is starting to feel better. Rodgers said he hasn’t needed to take a pain-killing injection on the toe “in a number of weeks.”

Rookie center Josh Myers said he felt good after playing 32 snaps in a 37-30 loss at Detroit on Sunday. That marked the first time Myers had played in a game since suffering a knee injury Oct. 17 at Chicago.  In roster moves Wednesday the Packers placed guard Lucas Patrick on the reserve/COVID-19 list and guard Ben Braden was signed to the practice squad.

In the NBA tonight the Bucks host the Golden State Warriors.  Milwaukee (26-17),  losers of two straight games, has fallen to fourth place in the Eastern Conference.  The Bucks are three games behind the conference leading Chicago Bulls. The Warriors are second in the Western Conference, a game behind the first-place Phoenix Suns.

The Minnesota Vikings have requested to interview Eagles VP of football operations Catherine Raiche for their vacant general manager position.  This according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on Thursday morning. Garafolo reports that this is believed to be the first GM interview request for a woman in NFL history.  Raiche was promoted to her current executive role with the Eagles in May 2021. She joined the franchise in 2019 as a football operations/player personnel coordinator.

A native of Montreal, Raiche was the coordinator of football administration for the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes from 2015 to ’17, becoming the team’s assistant GM in 2017. She spent the next two years with the Toronto Argonauts as their director of football administration.

In men’s college basketball tonight, (#16) Ohio State (10-3) is at (#13) Wisconsin. The Badgers are 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten and have won five straight. At home Wisconsin is 7-1. Tipoff is at 6:00 at the Kohl Center.

The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Long Island Nets 133-104. The Herd had six players in double digits for points. Tremont Waters led the team with 19 points while Jaylen Bland added 15 points. Bucks assignment player Jeff Dowtin played in his first Herd game talling 11 points.  The Wisconsin Herd will play again on the road Friday, January 14 against the Long Island Nets with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
