Sports for January 10th

Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes in the first half and sat out the second half with nothing at stake as the Detroit Lions beat the top-seeded Green Bay Packers 37-30 Sunday. Backup Jordan Love threw two interceptions late in the game, sealing a defeat that didn’t affect Green Bay’s playoff positioning. The NFC North champion Packers (13-4) rolled into the Motor City after already clinching the conference’s No. 1 seed and its only first-round bye.

Rodgers, the reigning NFL MVP who may win the award for a fourth time, was 14 of 18 for 138 yards. He threw a 1-yard pass to Allen Lazard to cap a 13-play, 74-yard drive that took 7:18 off the clock to open the game and a 29-yard pass to the fourth-year receiver late in the second quarter for another score and then left the game.

Davante Adams caught six passes for 55 yards and surpassed Jordy Nelson’s single-season receiving yards team record.  Adams also finished the season with a team-record 123 catches for 1,557 yards and 11 touchdowns.  A.J. Dillon led the rushing attack with 63 yards on 14 carries and Patrick Taylor added 53 yards on 11 carries.  Aaron Jones sat the game.

The Lions (3-13-1) closed coach Dan Campbell’s first season with plenty of pride and some nothing-to-lose plays. With the win, though, they lost a shot at having the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft that was possible because Jacksonville toppled Indianapolis.

The Lions tied it 7-all late in the first quarter when seldom-used Tom Kennedy ended up with the ball on a reverse and threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Kalif Raymond.  Detroit took a 24-13 lead early in the third on a reverse flea-flicker with Jared Goff throwing a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brock Wright.

Love threw a go-ahead, 62-yard touchdown pass to Josiah Deguara with 4:49 left in the fourth, but the Packers could not hold on for the win. D’Andre Swift scored on a 14-yard run with 1:54 left to put Detroit back ahead. C.J. Moore intercepted Love’s pass at the Green Bay 36 on the ensuing possessions after it was deflected by linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, setting up Riley Patterson’s field goal to put the Lions up by a touchdown.

Love threw a second interception with 21 seconds left.

On the injury front, Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling left the game with a back injury.  OT David Bakhtiari, a 2020 All-Pro, started and played for first time since tearing his left ACL on Dec. 31, 2020 and C Josh Myers started after getting removed from IR on Saturday. The rookie second-round pick from Ohio State had been out since had a knee injury on Oct. 17 at Chicago.

The Packers are off until the divisional round begins in two weeks.

Elsewhere in the NFC North the Viking (8-9) closed out a disappointing with a win at  home over the Bears (6-11),  31-17

In Sunday Night Football the Raiders won a wild game at home over the Chargers 35-32 on a field goal in overtime.   The Raiders squandered a 15-point lead in the final five minutes of regulation and allowed the Chargers to convert on six of seven fourth-down attempts and all four of their red-zone opportunities, but won it on a 47-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson as time expired. earning their first playoff berth in five years.

Strangely, the Raiders could have have assured themselves of a playoff spot without the field goal. If the game had ended in a tie, both they and the Chargers would have advanced and left the Steelers on the outside looking in. And for a moment it appeared that might happen.

Tyler Wahl scored a career-high 21 points, Johnny Davis added 19, and No. 23 Wisconsin survived Maryland’s comeback Sunday night to secure a 70-69 victory. The Badgers (13-2, 4-1 Big Ten) extended their winning streak to five despite squandering a 21-point lead against the struggling Terrapins. Eric Ayala scored all 19 of his points in the second half for Maryland (8-7, 0-4), which is off to its worst start in league play since losing its first four ACC games in 1992-93.

Steven Crowl gave Wisconsin the lead for good with a 3-pointer with 4:03 remaining to make it 60-57. Ayala cut the deficit to 70-69 on a 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining. Brad Davison missed two free throws with 3.9 seconds left, but Ayala’s heave at the buzzer was offline as the Badgers escaped.

Wisconsin will attempt to avenge its lone Big Ten loss of the season Thursday when it welcomes No. 13 Ohio State to Madison.

In the NBA tonight Milwaukee (26-16) is at Charlotte (21-19).  The Bucks will try to avenge a 114-106 to the Hornets Saturday night, despite 43 points and 12 rebounds from Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost their first game of the regular season to the Maine Celtics 117-89. The Herd and the Celtics stayed close throughout most of the game with 12 lead changes and six times tied, but a strong offensive fourth quarter helped the Celtics secure the win. This is the first time all season the Herd scored under 100 points.

The two teams stayed within six points of each other until the middle of the third quarter when the Celtics took the lead with six minutes left. The Celtics went on an 11-0 run to build their lead to 71-60. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Celtics led 76-68. Maine continued to outscore the Herd going 22-14 to go up 93-76. The Celtics remained on top to beat the Herd 117-89.

Terry Larrier led both teams with a career and team-season high of 42 points. Lindell Wigginton added 13 points and Javin DeLaurier had 14 rebounds. The Herd had only four players from their original roster play tonight. Johnson, Outlaw, Stansberry and Wyche played in their first Herd game combining for 19 points.

The Maine Celtics were led by Aaron Nesmith with 21 points while Juwan Morgan added 17.

The Herd will play again on Wednesday, January 12 at the Long Island Nets with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
