Sports for January 14th

The Packers continue to get healthier at the right time. Green Bay saw the return of Za’Darius Smith on Tuesday. Now you can add Whitney Mercilus to the growing list of players returning to practice. Mercilus went on injured reserve after suffering a torn biceps against the Seahawks in week 10. Many thought that injury would sideline the veteran pass rusher for the rest of the season. Then on Thursday he returned to the practice field. A surprise for even defensive coordinator Joe Barry.  Throughout the regular season Rashan Gary and Preston Smith have carried the load for the Packers pass rush. That’s with the pair combining for 18.5 sacks. Adding more pass rushers, though, will only help their rotations heading into the playoffs.  The Packers will find out after this weekend who their opponent will be in the divisional round of the playoffs at Lambeau Field.

The NFL playoffs start this weekend.  Here’s a listing of the games and times.

Saturday-3:30-Las Vegas at Cincinnati

Saturday-7:15-New England at Buffalo

Sunday-Noon-Philadelphia at Tampa Bay

Sunday-3:30-San Francisco at Dallas

Sunday-7:15-Pittsburgh at Kansas City

Monday-7:15-Arizona at Los Angeles Rams

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks made sure coach Mike Budenholzer had an easy first night back on the job. Antetokounmpo had 30 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to help Milwaukee rout the Golden State Warriors 118-99 on Thursday night in Budenholzer’s return from the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols. Antetokounmpo had his third triple-double of the season and 28th of his career.  Budenholzer missed four games while in the health and safety protocols, with assistant Darvin Ham taking over as acting head coach. The Bucks went 1-3.

Khris Middleton added 23 points, Bobby Portis 20 and Grayson Allen 15 for the Bucks. Milwaukee never trailed while racing to a 77-38 halftime advantage and handing the Warriors their fourth loss in five games. Antetokounmpo had 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the first half.  The Bucks were just two points shy of their largest halftime lead in franchise history, a record they set this season. Milwaukee led 77-36 at the half in a 123-92 victory over Orlando on Nov. 22.  Andrew Wiggins led the Warriors with 16 points. Jonathan Kuminga had 15, Curry 12 and Thompson 11.  The Bucks host Toronto Saturday.

Brad Davison scored 25 points and No. 13 Wisconsin beat No. 16 Ohio State 78-68 on Thursday night for its sixth straight victory. Tyler Wahl added 20 points, one point shy of his career high, for the Badgers (14-2, 5-1 Big Ten). Johnny Davis had 14 points and nine rebounds. Not only did Wahl spend time guarding Buckeyes standout E.J. Liddell, he had a career-high six assists and made his first 3-pointers of the season. Wahl only scored three points in an 18-point Ohio State victory over Wisconsin in December.  Wisconsin was 10 of 23 from 3-point range. Davison made 4 of 6 baskets from 3-point range. Liddell scored 18 points for Ohio State (10-4, 4-2). Jamari Wheeler added 11 points, and Malaki Branham, Zed Key and Kyle Young each had 10.  Wisconsin at Northwestern on Tuesday night.

Donovan Ivory had 19 points off the bench in his first game back from injury and Randy Tucker had a career-high 17 points as the Green Bay Phoenix defeated IUPUI, 69-54. Kamari McGee had 12 points, while Lucas Stieber had 7 assists. Green Bay now moves to 2-4 Horizon League play.
