Sports for January 31st

The Super Bowl will feature the Los Angeles Rams against the upstart Cincinnati Bengals. Travin Howard made a game-sealing interception with 1:09 to play and the Los Angeles Rams rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to secure a spot in the Super Bowl at their home stadium next month with a thrilling 20-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game Sunday night. Cooper Kupp caught two touchdown passes from Matthew Stafford for the star-studded Rams (15-5), who began the fourth quarter down 17-7 after wasting a multitude of scoring opportunities. But after Kupp’s second TD catch and a tying field goal on a drive extended by Jaquiski Tartt’s brutal dropped interception, the Rams drove for Matt Gay’s go-ahead, 30-yard field goal with 1:46 to play. Stafford passed for 337 yards, completing 31-45, two touchdowns and one interception in the third playoff victory of his 13-year career. Kupp finished with 11 catches for 142 yards in his latest spectacular game, while Odell Beckham Jr. punched his ticket to his first Super Bowl with yet another strong performance by Los Angeles’ midseason acquisition, making nine catches for 113 yards.
Los Angeles’ defense then won it when Aaron Donald got hold of Jimmy Garoppolo and forced him to fling a pass toward JaMycal Hasty. The ball caromed high in the air off Hasty’s hands and came straight down to Howard — and the fourth-year pro didn’t miss it.
Deebo Samuel and George Kittle caught touchdown passes from Garoppolo, who completed 16-30 passes for 232 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the 49ers (12-8). While San Francisco’s defense faltered late, coach Kyle Shanahan also punted twice from the Rams’ half of the field and a third time from the 50, and that caution likely ended up costing the Niners. San Francisco also will lament its late-game execution, but no mistake was bigger than the dropped interception by Tartt, who could have put the Rams in dire straits moments after McVay wasted his final timeout on a failed challenge early in the fourth quarter. The 49ers led halftime 10-7.

Earlier in the AFC Championship Game the Cincinnati Bengals stunned the Kansas City Chiefs on the road 27-24 on a field goal by rookie Evan McPherson to send the Bengals back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1988. Buffalo overcame a 21-10 halftime deficit and narrowed the gap to tie the game at 21-21 at the end of three quarters. Both teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter as McPherson put the Bengals ahead with a 52-yard field goal before Harrison Butker tied 24-24 on a 46-yard field goal to send the game into overtime. The Chiefs won coin toss but Patrick Mahomes was intercepted and the Bengals drove 45 yards in nine plays to see up McPherson’s game-winning 31 yard kick.
Burrow was 22 of 38 for 250 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Joe Mixon gained 88 yards on 21 carries for Cincinnati while Tea Higgins grabbed six passes for 103 yards and Ja’Mar Chase and Samaje Perine each caught a touchdown pass. After a hot start Patrick Mahomes cooled off in the second half and finished 26-39 for 275 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Travis Kelce caught 10 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown and Tyreek Hill and Mercole Hardman also caught scoring passes. Kansas City was trying to make its third straight Super Bowl appearance.
