Sports for Friday

It looks like Green Bay Packers Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will become the head coach of the Denver Broncos. NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero cited sources that said the Broncos were finalizing a deal with Hackett. The #Broncos are finalizing a deal with #Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett to make him their new head coach, per sources. Contract talks heated up Wednesday night. The Jaguars planned to interview Hackett again today. Instead, Denver lands its top choice.

Hackett, who has been on the Packers staff since 2019, also interviewed for head coaching jobs in Jacksonville, Minnesota, and Chicago.

Denver is seen as a potential landing spot for Aaron Rodgers should he or the Packers decide to part ways in the offseason. Hackett and Rodgers are very close, which only fuels speculation that Denver is interested in both of them. The #Packers lose their OC, but have a prime candidate to replace Hackett in Luke Getsy, who also interviewed in Denver. Matt LaFleur had said he hoped to promote from within.

The Chicago Bears have their new head coach, after reportedly making the decision to hire a defensive coordinator from a team that did not make the playoffs. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Indianapolis Colts now-former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is being hired as Chicago’s next head coach.

Schefter also mentioned that the team considered Jim Caldwell and Dan Quinn, but ended up selecting Eberflus.

Eberflus was the defensive coordinator for the Colts for the past four seasons. Prior to that, he was the linebackers coach for the Dallas Cowboys for seven seasons.

No more comebacks for Ben Roethlisberger. The longtime Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback announced his retirement on Thursday, saying it was “time to clean out my locker, hang up my cleats” after 18 seasons, two Super Bowls, countless team records and a spot in the Hall of Fame all but secure.

“I don’t know how to put into words what the game of football has meant to me and what a blessing it has been,” Roethlisberger, 39, said in a video message. “But I know with confidence I have given my all to the game; I am overwhelmed with gratitude for what it has given me.”

The much-anticipated decision came less than two weeks after Pittsburgh’s lopsided loss to Kansas City in the first round of the postseason, the 12th time in Roethlisberger’s career the Steelers reached the playoffs.

It should have been a day of celebration for Wisconsin freshman Chucky Hepburn. He returned to his home state to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the same court where he played two state high school championship games, and he scored 13 points and made two key steals as the 11th-ranked Badgers won 73-65 on Thursday.

A pall was cast over what should have been a joyous occasion. While his teammates returned to Madison after the game, he went home to Omaha for the funeral for a man the Hepburn family had taken in and was essentially a brother to Chucky. Vincent Burns, 20, was fatally shot outside an Omaha bar on Sunday night. No arrests have been made. Burns had known the family since grade school, and Greg Hepburn, Chucky’s father, was Vincent’s godfather.

Wisconsin (16-3, 7-2 Big Ten) bounced back from a 12-point home loss to Michigan State last Friday to win for the eighth time in nine games. The Badgers have won five straight conference road games. Brad Davison scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half, and the Badgers used 10-of-22 shooting on 3-pointers to overcome 37% overall shooting and a slow start by Johnny Davis, who was held to a season-low 13 points.

Nebraska (6-14, 0-9) lost its seventh straight since a Dec. 22 win over Kennesaw State. Bryce McGowens led the Huskers with 23 points and Alonzo Verge Jr. and Lat Mayen added 11 apiece.

Wisconsin hosts Minnesota on Sunday.

The Bucks begin a three-game home stand tonight against the New York Knicks.  The Bucks, 30-20, are tied with the 76ers, 29-19, and are two games behind the Eastern Conference leading Miami Heat.  The Heat lead the second-place Bulls by a half-game and the Cavaliers by a game-and-a-half.

Six All-Star selections, six All-Star starts for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The NBA announced Thursday night that the Milwaukee Bucks star was voted a starter for the 2022 All-Star Game.  The Greek Freak’s selection marks the sixth consecutive season he has been voted a starter for the game. His six selections tie Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most in franchise history. Antetokounmpo had an All-Star Game to remember last season. He made all 16 of his shots, scored 35 points and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Joining Antetokoumpo as starters are DeMar DeRozan of the Chicago Bulls, Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets, Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers, Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks, Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins of the Golden State Warriors, LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies. Durant and James, who received the most votes and are captains for the game, will pick other starters and reserves for their team in a draft format. The draft will take place Feb. 3. This year’s All-Start Game will be Feb. 20 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland.

The AFC Championship Game features Cincinnati at Kansas City Sunday afternoon with the kickoff at 2:00.  The NFC Championship Game has the 49ers at Los Angeles against the Rams with the kickoff at 5:30.  The winner’s advance to the Superbowl.

Dwayne Cohill posted 18 points as Youngstown State topped Green Bay 63-50 on Thursday night. Michael Akuchie had 13 points and seven rebounds for Youngstown State (11-10, 5-6 Horizon League). William Dunn added 11 points and eight rebounds. Shemar Rathan-Mayes had 10 points. Japannah Kellogg III and Kamari McGee each had 10 points for the Phoenix (4-15, 3-7). Cade Meyer had 10 rebounds.  The Penguins improve to 2-0 against the Phoenix this season. Youngstown State defeated Green Bay 82-58 on Dec. 4.

The Ripon College women’s basketball team hosts Cornell Saturday with the tipoff at 3:00.
