Dallman Backs Workforce Bill Package
State Representative Alex Dallman joined several of his Assembly colleagues in a press conference this week to announce a bill package that will work to address a stronger workforce. The state lawmaker from Green Lake is the lead author of one of the bills, which would relate to the amount of benefits received under unemployment insurance. The bill would determine the maximum weeks of eligibility for individuals based upon the current employment rate. Benefit weeks would max out at 26, if the unemployment rate was over 9 percent. The amount of weeks would be reduced according to the table included in the bill all the way down to 14 weeks if unemployment levels reach 3.5 percent. Dallman says he’s talked with many businesses around the district and the incentive to get back to work is extremely low, yet the demand for workers is incredibly high.
School Bus Driver Shortage
The state DOT’s Division of Motor Vehicles is implementing a temporary waiver to get more drivers behind the wheel and is encouraging former drivers to reinstate to help alleviate a shortage of school bus drivers. Drivers seeking their school bus license will have the portion of the test that identifies ‘under the hood’ engine components waived until March 31st. All other components of the written and road tests will remain. Drivers receiving a CDL, under the temporary waiver are permitted to operate intrastate school buses only. In addition, the DMV sent a letter to nearly 1,000 former drivers who let their school bus license lapse. The letter encourages interested drivers to renew their endorsement and check out employment opportunities in their community. Many school bus companies have implemented employment incentives, including increased wages and sign-on and referral bonuses.
