Sports for January 17th
The Green Bay Packers will host the San Francisco 49ers Saturday at 7:15 p.m. This comes after the 49ers defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card Round. The Packers (13-4) had a first-round bye.
Versatile receiver Deebo Samuel ran 26 yards for a touchdown the play after an interception by Dak Prescott, and the San Francisco 49ers held on for a 23-17 wild-card victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
The Cowboys had a final chance with 32 seconds remaining and were at the San Francisco 41 with 14 seconds to go when Prescott took off up the middle intending to slide and spike the ball for a final play. But Dallas didn’t get the snap off from the 24 until after the clock hit 0:00. After a brief delay, referee Alex Kemp announced the game was over.
The 49ers overcame an interception by Jimmy Garoppolo when they led by 13 in the fourth quarter. Prescott ran for a touchdown to get within a score, and had a chance to drive Dallas to a go-ahead score. But the 49ers got a stop at midfield when Prescott’s desperation fourth-down pass was just out of the receiver Cedrick Wilson’s reach. The Cowboys finished the season at 12-6 as they have not reached the divisional round of the playoffs in 27 years.
The 49ers (11-7) clinched their first playoff victory at the Cowboys in a storied postseason rivalry. Now they head to Tampa Bay for a divisional game, looking for another trip to the NFC championship game.
In other games Sunday in Wild Card weekend, the Buccaneers beat the Eagles 31-15 as Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes and the Chiefs doubled up on the Steelers 42-14, in what was quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s final game in the NFL. The Steelers led 7-0 as J.J. Watt scored a touchdown on fumble recovery but then the Chiefs offense came to life and dominated.

Bengals 26, Raiders 19. Cincinnati ended a 31-year year playoff drought that spanned eight games.
Bill 47, Patriots 17-Josh Allen was 21 of 25 for 308 yards and five touchdowns. He ran six time for 66 yards as the Bills scored touchdowns on seven straight possessions, a new league record.
Tonight the Wild Card weekend finishes play as the Rams host the Arizona Cardinals.

Packers Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett had a very busy bye week interviewing for head coaching openings across the NFL. Friday he had an interview with Jacksonville, Saturday both Chicago and the Broncos, and an interview with the Vikings on Sunday. Minnesota. NFL Network repored the Vikings requested permission to speak with 42-year-old Hackett and on Sunday it was expected to happen.
Greg Elliott made a tiebreaking free throw with 1.8 seconds left, and Marquette withstood a long second-half drought to beat No. 20 Seton Hall 73-72 on Saturday for its fourth straight victory. Darryl Morsell scored 26 points and Justin Lewis added 18 for Marquette, which had won its last three games by shooting 55.9% but needed to fight through adversity to survive this one. The Golden Eagles made just one basket in the first 8 1/2 minutes of the second half to squander an 11-point lead before rallying late. Marquette is at Villanova on Wednesday.
Ripon College 84, Lawrence University 75. Ripon improves to 9-5 and 5-0 in the conference.
Pascal Siakam had 30 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for his second career triple-double and the Toronto Raptors overcame an early 15-point deficit to beat the cold-shooting Milwaukee Bucks 103-96 on Saturday night. OG Anunoby added 24 points to help the Raptors improve to 3-0 this season against the defending champion Bucks, who shot a season low 33.8%. Toronto has won five straight in the series.
Grayson Allen had 18 points for the Bucks, and Khris Middleton added 16. The Bucks were missing guard Jrue Holiday for a fifth straight game as he deals with a sore left ankle. Toronto was playing without Gary Trent Jr. (swollen left ankle) and Scottie Barnes (right knee). The Bucks are at Atlanta on Monday.
The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, beat the Windy City Bulls Sunday afternoon 113-109. The Herd was up by one with one minute left but last-minute free throws secured the win for the Herd. Wisconsin was led with three players posting a double-double.
Sandro Mamukelashvili was on top for both teams with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Lindell Wigginton added 19 points. Rayjon Tucker posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Jemerrio Jones added another double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulls were led by Daniel Oturu with 19 points while Ethan Thompson added 17 points. The Herd will return home on Wednesday, January 19th when they host the Lakeland Magic with tip-off set for 11:30 a.m. CST
Sunday’s win completed a sweep over the weekend. On Friday the Herd beat the Long Island Nets 133-112. Six Herd players scored in double digits. The Herd was led by Jeff Dowtin Jr with 31 points while Rayjon Tucker added a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds.
The Long Island Nets were led by Craig Randall II with 21 points while Jordan Crawford added 16 points.
Novak Jokovich will not be playing in the Australian Open. An Australian court struck down his appeal to have his visa reinstated for a second time on Sunday, meaning he’ll be deported. The world No. 1 men’s tennis player confirmed in a statement that the fight is over and he will not compete in the Australian Open. Sunday’s ruling was a last-gasp attempt to overturn a ruling two days earlier after that stripped Djokivich of his visa for a second time.He was scheduled to begin his title defense at the tournament Monday evening local time (5 a.m. ET). That spot will now be filled by an alternate. This ends an unusual multiple-weeks long legal dispute that began when his visa was canceled on Jan. 6 upon his arrival in Melbourne for the tournament. That ruling was made because his medical exemption for the COVID-19 vaccine was considered ineligible by immigration officials.
