Sports for December 7th
The Packers returned from their bye week on Monday. Coach Matt LaFleur says there’s a possibility that three of his injured Pro Bowl players from last season could return to practice this week. The Packers have been playing without 2020 All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) as well as cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder) and outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith (back). Alexander and Smith were second-team selections in the 2020 All-Pro balloting. LaFleur said Monday they “potentially” could practice this week as the NFC North-leading Packers return from their off week and prepare for a Sunday night home game with the Chicago Bears.
The Packers also placed quarterback Jordan Love on the reserve/Covid-19 list Monday afternoon. Love has publicly said previously that he is vaccinated, so the move means he recently tested positive for COVID-19. If he is asymptomatic, he will need two back-to-back negative tests to return. Meanwhile, if Aaron Rodgers is still sitting out from practice this week with his toe injury, practice squad quarterback Kurt Benkert will likely be taking most of the first team reps.
In Monday Night football in a battle for first place in the AFC East, New England held off Buffalo to win 14-10 in blustery cold conditions in Buffalo. The Bills missed a field goal early in the fourth quarter and then the Patriots kept Buffalo out of the end zone on two later drives. Because of the strong winds, the Patriots concentrated on running the football as rookie quarterback Mac Jones threw just three passes, completing two for 19 yards. Damien Harris led the New England rushing attack with 111 yards on 10 carries and the Patriots lone touchdown and Rhamondre Stevenson rushed 24 times for 78 yards as New England gained 222 yards on the ground. The Bills Josh Allen completed 15 of 30 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown to Gabriel Davis. Allen also led Buffalo in rushing with 39 yards on six carries as the Bills rushed for a total of 99 yards. New England improves to 9-4 heading into their bye week while the Bills fall to 7-5.
Giannis Antetokounmpo came back from a two-game absence and scored 27 points on his 27th birthday to help the Milwaukee Bucks defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 112-104 on Monday night. The two-time MVP also had 12 rebounds in his return from a sore right calf as the Bucks won for the 10th time in 11 games. Milwaukee split the two games it played without Antetokounmpo, losing 97-93 at Toronto and rolling to a 124-102 home victory over Miami.
Milwaukee broke a 29-all tie with seven straight points early in the second quarter and stayed ahead the rest of the way, though Cleveland made the Bucks work for it.
After trailing by as many as 13, the Cavaliers got the margin down to two in the fourth quarter. Cedi Osman missed a 3-point attempt with 6:14 left that would have given Cleveland its first lead since late in the first quarter. Jrue Holiday then hit a 3-pointer on the other end to extend the Bucks’ lead to 101-96 with 6:04 remaining. Milwaukee’s lead didn’t drop below five the rest of the way.
Holiday had 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Khris Middleton provided 21 points and eight assists. Pat Connaughton scored 12, and Bobby Portis had 10 points and 16 rebounds. The Bucks are undefeated this season when Antetokounmpo, Middleton and Holiday are all in the lineup.
Jarrett Allen led the Cavaliers with 25 points and nine rebounds while shooting 10 of 12. Lauri Markkanen scored 20, Kevin Love 15, Evan Mobley 12 and Darius Garland 10.
Milwaukee has beaten the Cavaliers eight straight times. The Bucks are 43-4 against Central Division opponents since Mike Budenholzer took over as coach in 2018. The Bucks play the Heat in Miami on Wednesday in the first of four straight road games.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Donte Divincenzo was assigned to the team’s G-League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, on Monday as he comes back from an ankle injury. Divincenzo has been out since having ankle surgery during the Bucks’ playoff run last June, and is getting close to a return this month, according to a report by Shams Charania of the Athletic.
The Herd don’t have a game scheduled until Sunday when they host the Cleveland Charge. In the past, like during Jabari Parker’s rehab in 2018, the team has sent players to Oshkosh to practice and workout with the Herd. Divincenzo started 66 games, averaging 10 plus points per outing, with the Bucks last season before the ankle injury. The team also bolstered their backcourt this year by trading for Grayson Allen during the offseason, and recently signing veteran guard Wesley Matthews.
The Wisconsin Badgers will head west to face Arizona State in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl on December 30th. It’s Wisconsin’s 20th straight trip to a bowl game after the Badgers finished the 2021 with an 8-4 record. Paul Chryst’s team started the year at 1-3 , rattling off seven straight wins before falling in the regular season finale to Minnesota. The meeting with Arizona State will be the fifth between the two schools. ASU holds a 3-1 series lead with the Badgers and Sun Devils splitting the last two meetings. The last coming in 2013 with Wisconsin falling 32-30 in Tempe, Ariz.
Wisconsin has also made plenty of trips to Las Vegas in their history. In all the Badgers have visited the city five times between 1986 and 2010. All five of those games were played against UNLV at Sam Boyd Stadium. Kick off between Wisconsin and Arizona will be at 9:30 p.m. CT at Allegiant Stadium.
