Sports for December 14th

The Packers are now the number one seed in the NFC after the Rams knocked off the Cardinals in Arizona Monday night, 30-23.  Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford had a big game and the Los Angeles defense picked off Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray twice The loss drops the Cardinals to third in the NFC behind Tampa Bay and the Packers.

On the night Stafford was 23-30 for 287 yards and three touchdowns.  His main receiver, Cooper Kupp, 13 caught 13 passes for 123 yards and a score. Teammate Odell Beckham Jr. caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown while Van Jefferson had two catches for 58 yards and a score.  On the ground Sony Michel rushed for 79 yards on 20 carries.  Arizona’s Kyler Murray completed 32 of 49 passes for 383 yards and two interceptions. The first interception came on a tipped pass late in the first quarter after the Cardinals had driven inside the Rams 10.  Receiver A.J. Green led Arizona with seven catches for 102 yards and Murray led in rushing with 61 yards on seven carries. The Cardinals are now 10-3 while the Rams improve to 9-4 in the NFC West.

Meanwhile after a terrible performance by special teams against the Bears Sunday night, the Packers will throw all hands on deck into making the unit better.  Green Bay’s coverage unit gave up 259 yards and a 97 yard touchdown against Chicago.  Plus, there were some miscues with a Mason Crosby kick off going out of bounds, Malik Taylor dropping a kick off out of bounds at the five yard line, and a muffed punt by Amari Rodgers what was canceled out by a penalty.

The Packers hope to have a better special teams performance when they visit Baltimore Sunday afternoon.

The NFL is requiring players, coaches and other team personnel to receive a COVID-19 booster by Dec. 27.

In a memo sent to teams on Monday and obtained by The Associated Press, the league said: “Given the increased prevalence of the virus in our communities, our experts have recommended that we implement the CDC’s recommendation.”

The league’s requirement extends to all Tier 1 and Tier 2 individuals who have previously received the vaccine. The CDC recommends an individual who received a second Pfizer or Moderna shot to complete the primary vaccine series more than six months earlier should receive a booster shot. A person who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson shot more than two months earlier should receive a booster shot.

The following do not have to meet the requirement:

An individual who is not eligible for a booster pursuant to the CDC definition.

— An individual who is in the 90-day test holiday after a confirmed positive COVID-19 test under the league protocols.

— An individual who received monoclonal antibodies within the immediately preceding 90 days.

— An individual whose “S” antibody level on an antibody test administered via BRL (BioReference Lab) at the club facility is 2500 or greater.

The league says anyone who is not currently subject to the requirement for boosters will be required to obtain the booster within 14 days of becoming eligible.

In the NBA Monday night Jayson Tatum scored 16 of his 42 points in the fourth quarter and the Boston Celtics beat the Milwaukee Bucks 117-103 on Monday night.

Jaylen Brown returned to the lineup after missing five games with a tight right hamstring and scored 19 points for Boston. Grant Williams had 17 points, and Robert Williams III and Al Horford each scored 10.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 20 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Milwaukee a day after posting his 26th career triple-double in a victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Jrue Holiday also had 20 points for the Bucks, who lost for just the third time in 15 games. Khris Middleton exited with a hyperextended left knee late in the third quarter.  Milwaukee (18-11)returns home home Wednesday night to host the Pacers.  The Bucks are tied with the Bulls for second place in the Eastern Conference, two games behind the Nets.
