Sports for December 2nd

Brad Davison scored nine straight points midway through the second half and finished with 27, leading No. 23 Wisconsin to a 70-66 win over Georgia Tech on Wednesday night. The Badgers (6-1) carried a one-point lead into halftime and built a 10-point advantage in the second half behind the play of Davison, Wisconsin’s second-leading scorer who averages 13.3 points.  Wisconsin leading scorer Johnny Davis added 15 points and six rebounds.

Michael DeVoe scored 33 points for Georgia Tech (5-2), which had its five-game winning streak halted.

The Yellow Jackets forged a tie at 61-all on a three-point play by DeVoe with 5:27 remaining. DeVoe scored 17 of his points in the first half. The senior guard surpassed his season average of 23.4 points in the middle of the second half, but didn’t get much help.  Sophomore guard Deivon Smith had nine points and 11 rebounds for Georgia Tech.

The Badgers took a 32-31 lead just two seconds before halftime when Davis made a 3-pointer. The half had been tightly contested up to that point. Davidson and Davis combined for seven 3-pointers in the first half, while their teammates shot 2 of 15 from long distance.

Wisconsin hosts Marquette on Saturday before kicking off Big Ten play against Indiana on Wednesday.

Both Oshkosh and St. Norbert men’s basketball won their conference openers on Wednesday night, as the 10th ranked Titans defeated Eau Claire 69-60. Hunter Plamann led four Titans in double figures with 20 points. Levi Borchert had 16 points and 13 rebounds as Oshkosh moves to 7-1 on the season.

In De Pere, St. Norbert defeated Lakeland 65-61 in its first ever Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.

In women’s college basketball last night UW-Oshkosh lost to Eau Claire 70-57 to drop to 6-2 on the season.

The Bucks held on to win their eighth straight game last night, 127-125, at home over the Charlotte Hornets.  Giannis Antetokounmpo led all scorers with 40 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing nine assists.  Khris Middleton added 21 for Milwaukee which improves to 14-8. Lamello Ball led the Hornets with 35 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. chipped in with 25 as Charlotte lost its third straight and falls to 13-11.  The Bucks play at Toronto tonight.

The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, loses first game of the season from a buzzer-beater by the Windy City Bulls. Scottie Lindsey made a three-point shot with two seconds left to win the game for the Windy City Bulls, 102-101.  Terry Larrier led the Herd with a season-high 24 points and 6 rebounds. Tremont Waters followed with 19 points and 2 rebounds. Javin DeLaurier added 11 rebounds and Wenyen Gabriel added 10 rebounds. The Herd had no assignment players or two-way players, Jaylen Lecque did not play and Jemerrio Jones left the game with 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Herd hit a season-low with 101 final points.

The Windy City Bulls were led by Tyler Cook with 32 points and 6 rebounds. Devon Dotson followed with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

The Herd will play away on Friday night against the Grand Rapids Gold with tip-off at 6 p.m. CST.

The Brewers acquired Hunter Renfroe from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Jackie Bradley Jr. ahead of the MLB lockout. Bradley Jr. was most effective in the outfield for the Brewers, but struggled at the plate in 2021. Hitting just .163 with 29 RBIs during his only season in Milwaukee. Heading to Boston means Bradley will be reunited with the franchise where he spent the first eight seasons of his career and won a World Series in 2018.

Boston sends back Hunter Renfroe, who last season hit .259 with 31 homer runs. That’s just two long balls short of Renfroe’s career high from 2019 when he was with the Padres.

Milwaukee also sent minor league infielders Alex Binelas and David Hamilton to the Red Sox in the deal. Binelas appeared in 68 games with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers last summer.

Major League Baseball locked out its players early Thursday morning, certifying the game’s first work stoppage in more than a quarter-century after months of talks yielded little progress toward a new labor contract. The long-anticipated lockout, which the league told the players’ union it would initiate once the previous collective bargaining agreement expired after 11:59 p.m. ET Wednesday, ends the transaction frenzy that led up to its imposition and sends the industry into a dark period with scant light in sight. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred expressed disappointment in the lockout but said he believes it is “the best mechanism to protect the 2022 season.”

In Thursday Night Football Dallas (7-4) plays at New Orleans (5-6.). The Cowboys have lost two straight and will be without head coach Mike McCarthy because of COVID related testing and wide receiver Cedric Wilson who suffered an ankle injury in last Thursday’s loss against the Raiders. The Cowboys are expected to have both CeeDee Lamb and Amari Cooper returning to action this game, along with Michael Gallup, so Wilson’s snaps were probably going to be reduced anyway. Cooper was activated from the Reserve/COVID 19 list on Wednesday. The Saints have lost four straight games.

Running back LEONARD FOURNETTTE of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, cornerback RASUL DOUGLAS of the Green Bay Packers and punter THOMAS MORSTEAD of the Atlanta Falcons are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played in Week 12 (November 25, 28-29). Douglas recorded five tackles, four passes defensed and a 33-yard interception-return for a touchdown, the first touchdown of his career, in a 36-28 win over the Rams.

The Packers placed leading tackler De’Vondre Campbell on the reserve/Covid-19 list on Tuesday after the linebacker reportedly tested positive for Covid-19. Five NFL players landed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list today — including #Packers LB De’Vondre Campbell — and they all tested positive, per the wire. Tom Pelissero

Campbell has been a star in the Packers defense after joining the team as a free agent late in the offseason program. He leads the team with 99 tackles, but has also added a sack, 2 interceptions, 4 pass break ups, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Campbell’s vaccination status is unknown, but with the Packers on a bye week, they don’t play again for 12 days, so there is a chance Campbell will not miss any games if he can pass all the protocols.
