The Atlanta Braves won their first World Series Championship since 1995 Tuesday night beating the Astros in Houston 7-0.   Atlanta won the series 4-2.

Jorge Solar started the scoring off with a three-run homer in the third inning off Astros starter Luis Garcia, who took the loss.  The Braves would score three more in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run from shortstop Dansby Swanson and an RBI double by first-baseman Freddie Freeman.  Atlanta finished off the scoring with a single run in the seventh. Starter Max Fried escaped from a first inning jam as Houston had runners on first and second with nobody out, to pick up the win.  He went six innings, giving up four hits while striking out six and issuing no walks. Atlanta’s pitching gave up just six hits on the night.

The Packers are back on the practice field today as they get ready for Sunday’s game at Kansas City against the Chiefs. On Tuesday the team made several roster moves, including releasing linebacker Jaylon Smith. Smith, who signed with the team Oct. 7, played 27 defensive snaps in two games. In addition, Green Bay signed defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson to the practice squad and placed quarterback Kurt Benkert on the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list. Anderson is returning to the squad after spending the first two weeks of the season on it.

The Packers also made a change at long snapper, releasing Hunter Bradley and signing Steven Wirtel from the practice squad. Wirtel was signed in early September after spending time with the Detroit Lions in 2020 and the Los Angeles Rams during the offseason. In addition, Green Bay signed defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson to the practice squad and placed quarterback Kurt Benkert on the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list. Anderson is returning to the squad after spending the first two weeks of the season on it.

There was a milestone reached Sunday for head coach Matt LaFleur who now has more wins in his first 40 regular season-games as coach, 32, than any other in NFL history, dating back to the start of the Super Bowl era.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 28 points, nine assists and eight rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks ended a three-game losing streak with a 117-89 rout of the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. With Brook Lopez (back) sidelined, Antetokounmpo spent much of the time playing center on defense.  The Bucks also got 16 points from Pat Connaughton and reserve Jordan Nwora as they broke a three-game losing streak.

Jerami Grant led the Pistons (1-6) with 21 points, but Trey Lyles was the only other player to reach double figures with 13.

The Pistons stayed close early, only trailing 36-31 in the second quarter, but they couldn’t score consistently against Milwaukee’s defense. The Bucks finished the half with a 21-8 run to take a 57-39 lead. Antetokounmpo, who played 27 minutes total, had 12 points and seven rebounds in the first half, as the Bucks outshot Detroit 47.8% to 34.1%.  Grant had 14 points in the half for the Pistons including 3 3-pointers, but his teammates went 2 for 19 from behind the arc. The Bucks expanded their lead to 29 points in the third quarter and cruised to the easy win.  The Bucks host the New York Knicks on Friday night.

The Green Bay Packers Foundation honored its annual grant recipients during a luncheon Tuesday, and awarded a total of $1 million to more than 270 civic and charitable organizations.The luncheon was held to recognize each grant recipient, as well as the role they play in the community.

This year’s grant cycle focused on organizations that will direct the money toward the areas of arts and culture, athletics and education. A first-time recipient of the grant is “Hope Squad” – a suicide prevention program at Ashwaubenon Middle and High Schools.  Its school social worker says the grant will help them expand their mission. The Packers say next year, its focus areas for the grants will be animal welfare, civic and community, as well as domestic violence causes.
