Sports for November 17th

Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus has gone on injured reserve after hurting his biceps in a 17-0 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Packers announced the move Tuesday. The designation means Mercilus must miss at least the next three games. Mercilus joined the Packers on Oct. 21,one day after the Houston Texans released him. He has appeared in four games with the Packers and has five tackles and a sack.

In other moves Tuesday, the Packers moved linebacker Tipa Galeai from the practice squad to the active roster, signed linebacker La’Darius Hamilton and running back Kerrith Whyte to the practice squad and released defensive lineman Auzoyah Alufohai.

Meanwhile the Packers are back on the practice field today as they get ready for the Vikings Sunday in Minnesota.  Green Bay is 8-2 while he Vikings are 4-5.

The Green Bay Packers began their stock offering to the public on Tuesday.  The organization is offering 300,000 shares in its sixth stock offering. Fans can purchase stock at https://packersstock.com/ or by calling 833-OWN-PACK (833-696-7225). Each share costs $300 plus a handling fee.  By 11 a.m. Tuesday, the Packers had sold $10 million worth of stock. Packers running back A.J. Dillon was among the buyers.

The Packers’ public ownership is unique in the NFL. The organization cautions that owning stock in the Packers isn’t like stocks traded on open markets. “Anyone considering the purchase of Packers stock should not purchase the stock to make a profit or to receive a dividend or tax deduction or any other economic benefits,” and there’s no protection from securities laws, the team says.

The funds will go toward construction projects at Lambeau Field, new video boards and concourse upgrades.

The stock offer is limited to people in the United States and its territories, subject to regulatory processes in some states. Stocks can only be purchased by individuals (or spouses as joint tenants), including shares purchased as a gift for other individuals. Owners are limited to buying 200 shares, counting shares they purchased in the 1997-98 and 2011-12 stock offerings. Shares can be purchased online with credit or debit cards or electronic bank transfers. They can also be purchased through mail with a personal check or cashier’s check.  The stock offering will end on February 25, 2022, but is subject to an extension.

NBA (Tues.)

The Lakers play at Milwaukee. The Bucks (6-8) are tied with Atlanta for first in the Central Division in the Eastern Conference while the Lakers (8-7) are first in the Pacific Division in the Western Conference.

Retired NFL player Brett Favre missed a deadline to pay $228,000 in interest on welfare money he was paid for a public speaking contract he did not fulfill, the Mississippi state auditor said Tuesday. Auditor Shad White said he is turning the matter over to the state attorney general’s office, a month after sending a demand letter to Favre. White said the attorney general is in charge of enforcing unmet auditor’s demands.

Favre is not facing criminal charges, but the leader of the organization that paid him is awaiting trial in one of Mississippi’s largest embezzlement cases.

Favre and White feuded Oct. 29 over the auditor saying Favre failed to make speeches after being paid by welfare money. The Twitter spat happened days after Favre repaid $600,000 to the state — the last portion of the $1.1 million that the auditor said Favre received from a nonprofit organization that used money intended to help needy people in one of the poorest states in the U.S. The auditor said Favre still owes $228,000 in interest. The former Green Bay Packers quarterback, who lives in Mississippi, wrote that he made commercials for which he was paid by a nonprofit organization. White tweeted that Favre’s contract required speeches and a radio ad.

Illinois coach Bret Bielema has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss his team’s game at No. 18 Iowa on Saturday. Bielema said he was tested for the coronavirus Monday night after developing mild symptoms during the day. He said he is vaccinated and received a booster shot last week. Bielema said without elaborating that he would be as present as possible for Saturday’s game through technology. Assistant head coach George McDonald will be in charge during Bielema’s absence. Bielema said he hopes to return to the team next week.
