Multiple Packers players were injured during Sunday’s home game against the Seattle Seahawks, and a new report says one of them will likely miss the rest of the season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports linebacker Whitney Mercilus will miss the rest of this season after tearing his biceps Sunday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, head coach Matt LaFleur spoke about Mercilus’ injury, saying in part “it’s just one of those unfortunate things that happen.” The Packers signed Mercilus in late October in hopes of helping their pass rush after he was released by the Houston Texans. He was drafted by the Texans in 2012.
The news comes after reports regarding the injuries sustained by running back Aaron Jones and linebacker Rashan Gary surfaced earlier in the day.
Schefter also reported Jones has a mild MCL sprain, and had an MRI on Monday. He may be out one to two weeks. Meanwhile, Gary has a hyperextended right elbow, and reports say he may try to play this coming weekend in Minnesota with a brace.
In Monday Night Football the 49ers dominated the Rams at home 31-10. San Francisco’s rushing offense pounded the Rams defense and the 49ers defense stifled quarterback Matthew Stafford and company. Los Angeles was picked off on the game’s first possession by Jimmy Ward and then the 49ers methodically marched down the field on a 20-play, 89 yard drive that ended when Jimmy Garoppolo hit tight end George Kittle for an 8-yard touchdown. Stafford was picked off again on San Francisco’s second possession by Ward who ran it in for 14-0 lead. It was 21-7 at the half and 24-7 at the end of three quarters. San Francisco controlled the ball for nearly 40 minutes. Garoppolo was 15-19 for 182 yards and two touchdowns while Eli Mitchell rushed 27 times for 91 yards as the 49ers finished with 156 yards on the ground. Stafford finished 27-41 for 243 yards one touchdown to Cooper Kupp and two interceptions. Kupp finished with 11 catches for 122 yards. The Rams managed just 52 yards rushing. The Rams lost their second straight and fall to 7-3 while the 49ers improve to 4-5.
More people will have an opportunity to buy stock in the Green Bay Packers. The organization announced it will offer 300,000 shares in its sixth stock offering starting Tuesday, November 16, at 8 A.M. Central Time. Fans will find details Tuesday on the Packers website, including the offering document required to purchase the stock. Each share will cost $300 plus a handling fee.
The Packers’ public ownership is unique in the NFL. The organization cautions that owning stock in the Packers isn’t like stocks traded on open markets. “Anyone considering the purchase of Packers stock should not purchase the stock to make a profit or to receive a dividend or tax deduction or any other economic benefits,” and there’s no protection from securities laws, the team says.
The stock offer is limited to people in the United States and its territories, subject to regulatory processes in some states. Stocks can only be purchased by individuals (or spouses as joint tenants), including shares purchased as a gift for other individuals. Owners are limited to buying 200 shares, counting shares they purchased in the 1997-98 and 2011-12 stock offerings.
Shares can be purchased online with credit or debit cards or electronic bank transfers. They can also be purchased through mail with a personal check or cashier’s check. The stock offering will end on February 25, 2022, but is subject to an extension, the Packers said.
The World Series champion Atlanta Braves added depth at catcher by signing Manny Piña to a two-year, $8 million contract Monday. Piña is the first player filing for free agency after the World Series to sign with a different club. He will make $3.5 million next season and $4.5 million in 2023. The contract also includes a $4 million club option for 2024 with no buyout. The 34-year-old Piña hit a career-best 13 home runs in 75 games with Milwaukee this past season, his sixth with Brewers. He joins starting Braves catcher Travis d’Arnaud, who agreed to a two-year, $16 million extension during the season that includes an $8 million club option for 2024.
Tyler Kolek converted a steal into a go-ahead layup with 18 seconds left and Marquette forced 26 turnovers for a 67-66 comeback victory over No. 10 Illinois.
