Sports for November 5th

The Green Bay Packers added a backup quarterback Thursday with reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers on the reserve/COVID-19 list and questions swirling over how the team handled the NFL’s COVID protocols. With Rodgers out at least Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Packers signed veteran Blake Bortles to the practice squad. Jordan Love, the 2020 first-round pick, will make his first NFL start and Bortles will be added to the game-day roster to serve as the backup. It’s the first time the Packers have not had Rodgers on the field since 2017 when they visit Arrowhead Stadium to face the Chiefs on Sunday.

While the Packers are focused on extending their winning streak to eight games, the larger issue revolves around how the team and Rodgers handled the league’s COVID protocols. During a press conference Thursday, coach Matt LaFleur said he is “100% confident” protocols were followed within the “football space.”  Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy also addressed the situation Thursday. He says the team is working with the league.

The Chiefs (4-4) with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback will try to move above .500 while the Packers have won seven straight since a season-opening loss to the Saints.  Green Bay has a chance to exploit the Chiefs rushing defense, which is ranked in the bottom third of the league, giving up 974 yards in the first eight weeks. That’s an average of almost 122 yards a game. Just slightly above the Packers 108 yards per game as an offense. Last week, the Packers rushing duo of Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon combined for 137 yards and a touchdown against Arizona.

The Packers made some more  roster moves on Thursday with one involving a running back. Patrick Taylor was signed to the 53-man roster to replace Kylin Hill, who was lost for the season due to a knee injury.

Sunday’s pregame starts at 1:00 with the kickoff at 3:20 from Kansas City and can be heard on FM 102.3, The Bug.

Carson Wentz threw three touchdown passes and former Badger Jonathan Taylor rushed for 174 yards as the Colts won at home Thursday night over the Jets, 45-30. Wentz was 22-30 for 273 yards and the three touchdowns.  Taylor and Nyheim Hines combined for 246 of the Jets 260 rushing yards. Taylor also scored on runs of 21 and 78 yards.  Jets starting quarterback Mike White was 7-11 for 96 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game in the first half, but is expected to be all right. His replacement, Josh Johnson, was 27-41 for 317 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.  The Colts improve to 3-4 while the Jets drop to 2-6.

The Bucks are back in action tonight, hosting the New York Knicks. The Knicks have lost

two straight and are 5-3 overall while the Bucks won their last game to improve to 4-4.

In college football Saturday Wisconsin is at Rutgers.  The Badgers are 5-3 while the Scarlet Knights are 4-4.  The pregame starts at noon with the kickoff at 2:30 and the game can be heard on AM1600/93.1 FM, WRPN.

Monmouth College is at Ripon (6-2).  Kickoff is at 1:00.

UW-Stevens Point is at UW-Oshkosh (5-2).  Kickoff is at 1:00.
