Already accustomed to playing without their top pass rusher, the Green Bay Packers now must prepare for the likely absence of their best cornerback. Jaire Alexander injured a shoulder in the second half of the Packers’ 27-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Without getting into specifics, Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Monday he had spoken with head athletic trainer Bryan Engel and team physician Patrick McKenzie about Alexander’s situation. When LaFleur was asked if he could rule out a worst-case scenario, he replied that “everything’s kind of getting looked at right now.”
If Alexander misses significant time, it would represent arguably the toughest blow yet for a team already dealing with multiple injuries. Outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith, who had a combined 26 sacks in 2019-20, hasn’t played since a season-opening 38-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints and might miss the rest of the season. Left tackle David Bakhtiari, a 2020 All-Pro selection, hasn’t played all season and will miss at least two more games as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling went on injured reserve with a hamstring issue last week and must miss at least two more games.
The Packers (3-1) played without guard/tackle Elgton Jenkins (ankle) for a second straight game Sunday and also were missing linebacker Krys Barnes and cornerback Kevin King due to concussions. Through it all, the Packers have won three straight games to lead the NFC North. They’ve beaten San Francisco and Pittsburgh the past two weeks while missing their two best offensive linemen.
Green Bay goes on the road for four of its next five games. That stretch starts Sunday when the Packers make their first trip to Cincinnati (3-1) since 2013.
In Monday Night Football Justin Herbert threw three touchdown passes as the Los Angeles Chargers won at home over the previously unbeaten Las Vegas Raiders 28-14. Both teams are now 3-1. The Chargers led 21-0 at halftime before the Raiders scored 14 points in the third quarter to make it 21-14 at the end going into the fourth quarter. On the night Herbert was 25 of 38 for 222 yards and three touchdowns. Former Packer tight end Jared Cook caught six passes for 70 yards and a score. The other touchdown passes went to Austin Ekeler and Donald Parham. Ekeler led all running backs with 117 yards on 15 carries and also scored a touchdown. The Raiders Derek Carr went 21 of 34 for 196 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The Raiders formerly played in Los Angeles.
The Major League Baseball playoffs begin tonight in the ALCS as the Yankees play at Boston. New York will send right-hander Gerritt Cole (16-8, 3.23 ERA and 245 strikeouts) against Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (11-9, 3.75 ERA and 195 strikeouts). First pitch is at 7:08 CDT.
The Milwaukee Bucks will require fans seated within 15 feet of court to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccine or negative COVID-19 test to get into Fiserv Forum. The move is in accordance with an NBA league-wide mandate. This impacts fans in rows AAA, BBB, CCC, DDD. The courtside fans will also be required to wear masks in their seats.
Fans must be fully vaccinated or show a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of the game. These fans will also be required to wear face masks while in their seats. Proof of vaccination includes a vaccine card or a photo of the front and back of a vaccine card. Fans can show an electronic copy or paper copy of the negative test result.

Wisconsin is listing quarterback Graham Mertz as questionable for Saturday’s game at Illinois. He was taken to a hospital with a chest injury after he was sacked in the third quarter of this weekend’s loss to Michigan. Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst says test results were encouraging. Mertz expressed optimism that he will be able to play against Illinois. The Badgers are just 1-3 this season and Illinois is 2-4 after snapping a four-game skid over the weekend.
Bubba Wallace became just the second Black driver to win at NASCAR’s top Cup Series level when rain stopped Monday’s playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway.
Wallace had driven through a crash and to the front of the field five laps before the second rain stoppage of the race. NASCAR tried to dry the track for nearly 45 minutes, but up against sundown and the rain not showing any signs of ceasing, the race was called off. Wallace had been waiting atop his pit stand for NASCAR to make a decision and exploded in celebration with his crew when the race was called. Wallace is in his first season driving for 23X1 Racing, a team owned by both Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan. He’s the first Black driver to win at NASCAR’s elite Cup level since Wendell Scott in 1963 — a race where he wasn’t declared the victor for several months. NASCAR at last presented Scott’s family with his trophy from that race two months ago.
