Sports for October 19th

Injuries continue to be a significant storyline six weeks through the Packers season, but head coach Matt LaFleur delivered some positive news on the injury front Monday.  Packers All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari is expected to return to practice this week. Bakhtiari tore his ACL in December of the 2020 season. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin this season and this is the first week he’s eligible to return. LaFleur said “time will tell” when he will be able to suit up for games.

While Bakhtiari’s return will be a big boost to the offensive line, center Josh Myers could miss time after sustaining a knee injury in the first quarter against the Bears. LaFleur said it is likely he will miss a few weeks. Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is eligible to come off injured reserve this week, although LaFleur said he could not comment whether or not he would return to practice. On the defensive side, Preston Smith left Sunday’s game with an oblique injury.  LaFleur said cornerback Kevin King (shoulder) is getting better each day and his situation is day-to-day. As for cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder), LaFleur said surgery cannot be 100% ruled out, but he is “progressing nicely.”  Despite the injuries, the Packers have won five straight games and sit on top of the NFC North with a 5-1 record. It’s a credit to the next man up mentality the team has carried this season.

The Packers are off today and host the Washington Football Team Sunday at noon.

In Monday Night Football the Tennessee Titans used a goal line stand to hold off the visiting Buffalo Bills to pick up a 34-31 victory.  The Titans stopped Bills quarterback Josh Allen on a fourth and one from the three yard line to hang on. With 22 seconds left, Buffalo decided to go for the win instead of a tie but Allen appeared to slip moving left and was stuffed by Jeffrey Simmons. Simmons tackle led to a kneel-down and a thrilling Titans win that saw multiple lead changes.

Tennessee running back Derrick Henry amassed 156 scrimmage yards on just 22 touches and three touchdowns, including 143 yards on 20 carries. Henry scored on a 76-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give the Titans a 7-6 lead. In the second half he scored on runs of three and 13 yards. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill was 18 of 29 for 216 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.  The Bills Josh Allen had a huge game, completing 35 of 47 for 353 yards, three touchdowns and one pick.  The win moved Tennessee (4-2) atop the AFC South while the Bills dropped to 4-2 but still lead the AFC East.

In the ALCS the Red Sox pounded Houston 12-3 at home to lead their best-of-seven game series 2-1.  Kyle Schwarber hit Boston’s third grand slam of the series. The Red Sox are the first team in post season history to have three grand slams in one series.  Game three is tonight in Boston.

The NLCS continues later this afternoon as the Braves play on the road against the Dodgers with Los Angeles leading 2-0.

Milwaukee Bucks guard Grayson Allen has signed a multi-year contract extension less than 2 1/2 months after the team acquired him from the Memphis Grizzlies. Allen joined the Bucks in an Aug. 7 trade that set guard Sam Merrill and two future second-round draft picks to Memphis. Allen posted career highs in scoring (10.6), rebounding (3.2) ad assists (2.2) last season in 50 games with the Grizzlies. The 26-year-old Allen averaged 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds and 22.4 minutes in four preseason games with the Bucks.

Washington State fired football coach Nick Rolovich and four of his assistants on Monday after they refused to comply with a mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against COVID-19. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee had set a deadline of Monday for thousands of state employees, including the Cougars’ coaches, to be vaccinated against the coronavirus or risk losing their jobs.

Also fired were assistant coaches Ricky Logo, John Richardson, Craig Stutzmann and Mark Weber after they did not comply with Inslee’s proclamation that was issued in August. Chun said there might be no precedent for a team losing its head coach and so many assistants in the middle of a season. Defensive coordinator Jake Dickert has been elevated to interim head coach. His first game in charge will be Saturday at home against BYU.
