Sports for October 18th

Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 24-14 victory over the Chicago Bears. The Packers (5-1) beat the Bears (3-3) for the 20th time in 23 games counting the playoffs and improved to 22-5 with Rodgers as the starter against Chicago. They also prevented Chicago from tying them for the NFC North lead. According to Elias Sports, it was the 57lh consecutive win by Green Bay when leading the Bears by 10 points in the fourth quarter. The last time the Bears overcame a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter was on September 25th ,1960.  It was also the Packers seventh straight win NFC North win for head coach Matt LaFleur and no losses on the road in the division.   Coach Matt LaFleur said it was a great team effort and credited the Bears with having the best defense they’ve played against so far this season.

Rodgers shook off a sluggish start, throwing a 1-yard touchdown to Allen Lazard in the second quarter and a 12-yarder to Aaron Jones in the third.  Rodgers put the Bears away after Justin Fields threw a 5-yard touchdown to Darnell Mooney, as he scored from the 6 to cap a 75-yard drive.  That prompted the three-time MVP to shout the Bears crowd, “I still own you.” Rodgers was 17-23 for 195 yards and two touchdowns with a 128.0 passer rating.  Davante Adams caught four passes for 89 yards while Aaron Jones caught four for 34 and a touchdown and wide receiver Alan Lazard had three catches for 27 yards and a touchdown.  Jones rushed 19 times for 76 yards and A.J. Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard commissioned a new ship in Philadelphia that bears the name of former Green Bay Packers player Emlen Tunnell.   While serving with the Coast Guard in 1944, Tunnell suffered burns saving a shipmate after a Japanese torpedo hit their ship in Papau, New Guinea. Then, in 1946, he jumped into freezing water to save another shipmate who’d fallen off the USS Tampa in Newfoundland.  After his military service, Tunnell joined the NFL, playing for the New York Giants and the Packers. He won a championship with the Packers in 1961. He returned to the Giants as the NFL’s first Black full-time assistant coach and was the first Black player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Tunnell died in 1975 at the age of 50.  Tunnell’s jersey number with the New York Giants was 45, and this is the 45th fast response cutter used by the U.S. Coast Guard. It’s the first military ship to carry the name of a professional athlete.

The 154-foot Sentinel-class Emlen Tunnell will join three other Sentinel-class ships in the Arabian Gulf and homeport in Bahrain.
