Sports for October 11th

Mason Crosby hit a 49-yard field goal in overtime after missing three straight attempts as the Green Bay Packers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 25-22. The typically reliable Crosby missed potential winners with 2:12 and then 3 seconds left in regulation and missed another attempt in overtime before finally winning it.  Heading into the game he was 44 of 46 on field goal attempts since the start of the 2019 season.  The Bengals’ Evan McPherson also missed shots that could have won the game with 26 seconds left in regulation and again in overtime.

Crosby had a chance to hit a potentially decisive kick with 2:12 left, and again with 3 seconds remaining in regulation. Both went wide left. He got another chance to win it in overtime, but again he missed left.  Improbably, he got one more try to redeem himself.

Cincinnati had tied the score late in the fourth period. Joe Mixon bounced right for an 8-yard touchdown run, and Joe Burrow hit Tee Higgins in the back of the end zone for the 2-point conversion with 3:27 left.  Crosby was set up for a 36-yard shot with 2:12 left. After that miss, the Bengals drove to the Packers 47, but McPherson’s attempt bounced off the right upright with 26 seconds left. Then it was Crosby’s turn to miss again, a 51-yard attempt.  In overtime, Burrow was intercepted by linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, but Crosby missed his third straight.

Aaron Rodgers was 27-39 for 344 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.  He threw two touchdown passes to move into fifth place on the all-time list. Davante Adams had 11 catches for a career-high 206 yards.

Rodgers threw a 12-yard TD pass to AJ Dillon in the first quarter to tie for fifth place all-time with Philip Rivers. His 5-yard scoring toss to Adams in the second quarter put him ahead of Rivers. The Packers won their fourth straight since losing the opener to New Orleans.  Aaron Jones rushed 14 times for 103 yards.

Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow was 26-38 for 281 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Burrow was taken to the hospital as a precaution after the game for a possible throat contusion.

CB Kevin King left in the second half with a shoulder injury. … LB De’VondreCampbell left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury but returned. … Lucas Patrick started in place of C Josh Myers (finger). … CB Jaire Alexander (shoulder) was put on injured reserve on Saturday.

Max Fried pitched six sharp innings and Atlanta’s bullpen held on after manager Brian Snitker’s quick hook, sending the Braves over the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 Saturday to tie their NL Division Series at a game apiece. The Braves evened up the series after Milwaukee won Friday 2-1.

Once Fried was pulled, it got more dicey for the Braves. The Brewers brought the tying run to the plate against Atlanta’s bullpen in each of the last three innings but couldn’t get a key hit. They couldn’t do much of anything against Fried, who has allowed just one earned run over 29 innings in his last four starts.

Fried struck out nine, gave up three hits and didn’t walk anybody. The Brewers didn’t get a runner in scoring position until Willy Adames hit a two-out double in the sixth, and Fried responded by striking out Eduardo Escobar.

The Braves pulled ahead for good with two runs in the third off Brandon Woodruff. They were inches away from getting a third run in that inning. Soler hit a one-out double down the left-field line and scored on Freddie Freeman’s single. Albies drove in Freeman with an RBI double that went off the yellow at the top of the right-field wall. Albies responded to the double by doing push-ups near second base out of frustration that he didn’t homer.

The Brewers tried to make a comeback. After Luke Jackson struck out the first two batters he faced in the seventh, Luis Urías singled and Lorenzo Cain walked. Tyler Matzek replaced Jackson and got out of the jam by striking out pinch-hitter Tyrone Taylor. Jace Peterson walked and Kolten Wong singled to start the bottom of the eighth, but Matzek worked out of it by retiring Adames, Escobar and Avisaíl García in order. Will Smith worked around a leadoff walk to Yelich and a single by Urías in the ninth by getting a flyout and a groundball double play for his first career postseason save. Four Atlanta pitchers struck out 14 and combined on a six-hitter.

Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff took the loss. Hestruck out seven while allowing three runs, five hits and one walk in six innings. The All-Star right-hander had the worst run support of any major league starting pitcher during the regular season, which explains why he went 9-10 despite owning a sparkling 2.56 ERA.

Chez Mellusi ran for 145 yards and a touchdown and Wisconsin beat Illinois 24-0 on Saturday. Braelon Allen rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and John Chenal carried nine times for 38 yards and a touchdown for the Badgers. Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz was 10-of-19 passing for 100 yards with an interception. The Badgers (2-3, 1-2 Big Ten Conference) outgained Illinois 491-93 yards in total offense. Coming into the game, Wisconsin ranked third in the nation and led the Big Ten in total defense, allowing just 249 yards per game and allowing just 4.3 yards per play. Illinois (2-5, 1-3) had been showing progress in its running game.

Chase Brown led all Illinois rushers with 35 yards on eight carries. Brown rushed for 257 yards against Charlotte last week and tied his career high with two rushing touchdowns. Illinois starting quarterback Brandon Peters was 3-of-7 passing for 30 yards before sustaining an unknown injury while being sacked in the second quarter. Artur Sitkowski replaced him and went 8 of 27 for 55 yards.

The Badgers established the run early, scoring on a 17-yard Collin Larsh field goal late in the first quarter to cap an 18-play, 67-yard drive that featured just three passes.

Wisconsin boasts one of the toughest run defenses in the country, and Illinois has one of the best run offenses. But the Illini didn’t run the ball until the first series of the second quarter when Josh McCray rushed for no gain near the Illinois goal line following a Kerby Joseph interception that prevented a Wisconsin touchdown. Wisconsin outgained Illinois 206-33 in the first half despite Mertz going 3-of-9 passing for 15 yards. Illinois rushed for 21 yards and passed for just 12 before intermission. Wisconsin led 10-0 at the break. Wisconsin: Hosts Army on Saturday.

Redshirt freshman running back Jalen Berger has been dismissed from the Wisconsin football program, UW head coach Paul Chryst announced Sunday. Berger, a native of Newark, N.J., appeared in seven career games for the Badgers, carrying the ball 84 times for 389 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He also had four career receptions for 30 yards. He led the Badgers with 301 rushing yards in 2020 but was behind Chez Mellusi and other running backs on the depth chart this year. Berger had 24 carries for 88 yards this season.
