Sports for October 8th

The Brewers open their divisional series this afternoon at American Family Field against the Atlanta Braves.  One of the areas of concern for manager Craig Counsel is how to adapt his postseason bullpen to account for the absence of injured setup man Devin Williams.

Counsell had to navigate the Brewers through a season in which they used a franchise-record 61 players due primarily to injuries, but they still won the division with relative ease.  Counsell, who played on World Series-winning teams with the Marlins in 1997 and Diamondbacks in 2001, has led the Brewers to four straight playoff appearances.

Milwaukee’s starting pitching staff has been outstanding, featuring All-Stars Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta and stayed relatively healthy. The Brewers also got quality seasons from starting pitchers Adrian Houser (10-6, 3.22 ERA) and Eric Lauer (7-5, 3.19).

Right-hander Corbin Burnes will start game-one today against Braves right-hander Charlie Morton with the first pitch scheduled for 3:37.  Tomorrow Milwaukee has right-hander Brandon Woodruff going against Atlanta left-hander Max Fried with the first pitch at 4:07 Both games can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In the other NLDS game the Dodgers play at San Francisco.

The ALDS got underway Thursday as the Astros beat the White Sox 6-1 and Tampa Bay shutout Boston 5-0.  Game two for each team is today.

The Packers continue to get ready for the Bengals Sunday in Cincinnati.  As had been reported Jaylon Smith has joined the Green Bay Packers, one day after the Dallas Cowboys released the veteran linebacker.  The Packers officially announced Thursday afternoon that they had signed Smith. Packers coach Matt LaFleur had talked earlier in the day about how the former Cowboy would fit in with the Packers.  Smith wasn’t available to practice on Thursday, and LaFleur said it’s “highly unlikely” that Smith would play for the Packers (3-1) as soon as Sunday’s game in Cincinnati (3-1).  LaFleur talked about the signing saying he’s known Smith for a long time and that he brings talent and locker room leadership to the team. Smith made the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement in 2019 and led the Cowboys in tackles each of the past two seasons. He had nine tackles against Green Bay during the Packers’ 34-24 victory at Dallas in 2019.

The Brewers defense faces an improving Bengals team led by second-year quarterback Joe Burrow.

LaFleur also said there’s no update on injured cornerback Jaire Alexander who left Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh with a possible season-ending shoulder injury.

Sunday’s game starts at noon from Cincinnati with the pregame starting at 10:00 and can be heard on FM 102.3 FM, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football the Rams (4-1) won at Seattle (2-3) 26-17.  Both teams had injuries to their quarterback.  Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered an injury to the forefinger of his throwing hand just before half but had it taped up and continued to play.  Seattle’s Russell Wilson injured his right index finger in the second half and was unable to return. Stafford finished 25 for 37 for a season-high 365 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Robert Woods caught 12 passes for 150 yards.  Wilson was 11-16 for 152 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His backup, Gino Smith was 10-17 for 131 yards along with a touchdown and a pick. Seattle running back DK Metcalf carried five times for 98 yards and two touchdowns.

On the Men’s PGA Tour Sung Kang shot a 10-under 61 to lead by two strokes over three others in the first round of the Shriner’s Children’s Open in Las Vegas.

In the ShopRite LPGA Classic Jin Young Ko shot eight-par to lead by three-strokes after first- round play.
