The Packers continue to prepare for Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field against the Washington Football Team. With the Packers having won five consecutive games despite several key injuries, they signed veteran outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus on Thursday in hopes of boosting not only their pass rush but their championship hopes. Tthe 31-year-old Mercilus, a first-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2012 who was released by the team on Tuesday. With Za’Darius Smith questionable to return this season following back surgery, Green Bay is tied for ninth in the NFL with 14 sacks, but only tied for 19th with 53 pressures. The hope is Mercilus can bolster the pass rush and help offset the absence of All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander, who is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury. Coach Matt LaFleur said everything he’s heard about Mercilus has been positive saying he’s been competing at a high level for a long time. He will wear number 50. Also, linebacker Tipa Galeai (tee-puh nah-lee-eye), who is on the team’s practice squad, will now wear No. 40 for the Packers.
Meanwhile, left tackle David Bakhtiari practiced for the second day on Thursday. The veteran tore his ACL in a game last December and practiced for the first time on Wednesday. Coach Matt LaFleur said his progress will be monitored daily and there is no timetable for his return to game action.
