FDL Restaurant Fire Investigated

The state’s Department of Criminal Investigation is stepping in to investigate a fire at a Fond du Lac restaurant Sunday night. No one was hurt during the fire at A Family Affair Soul Food Kitchen, but due to the damage from the fire the restaurant on South Main Street has been condemned. Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says the city police department agreed to have the DCI step in and do the investigation because the restaurant is owned by City Council member Arletta Allen. It’s the second time in a little over a month that restaurant has been damaged. Last month someone broke in and damaged some cooking equipment. The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire.

John Deere Workers Overwhelmingly Reject Contract Offer

John Deere’s unionized workers overwhelmingly rejected a 6-year contract offer over the weekend paving the way for a possible strike at midnight Wednesday. The company has 10,000 workers at its 14 facilities, which includes John Deere Horicon Works in Horicon, Wisconsin. The company headquartered in Moline, Illinois is coming off a record year for profits earning more than $5.7 billion. John Deere’s union workers are represented by the UAW.

Fire Prevention Open House

On the heels of National Fire Prevention Week the Ripon Area Fire District hosted an open house at the fire station in Ripon Monday night. Fire Chief Tim Saul says with the pandemic it was their first open house in two years and a chance to get back to a little normalcy. In addition to fire truck rides, a chance to see the fire equipment and station, there were goodies for the kids and an opportunity to pass along tips about fire safety. The theme for this year’s National Fire Prevention Week was “Learn the Sound of Fire Safety.” Saul says it’s important to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, which could save your life. Saul says think of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as inexpensive insurance policies. He says if for some reason you don’t have access to them or can’t afford the detectors contact the Fire District at 920-745-2262.

Two For One

Health care experts say it’s safe to go two-for-one and get a flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine shot or booster on the same visit. The flu season the past year was a mild one, but you can not count on that this year. In addition if you suffer complications from the flu and need to be hospitalized you may be competing for bed space with COVID patients. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says if you’re not sure if it is safe to get flu and COVID vaccines at the same time you can do it separately or check with your primary physician. Masking, social distancing, and sanitizing efforts also helped to reduce the impact of the flu in the past year.
