Menasha Man Sentenced For Gas Station Arson

A federal judge in Green Bay this week sentenced a 28-year-old Menasha man to 7 years in prison for setting fire to the VP Gas Station in Neenah this past January. Christian Crawford was also ordered to pay $793,000 in restitution. Prior to starting the fire Crawford broke into the station to steal cigarettes, alcohol and other items many of which were recovered during a search of his residence. Those charges were resolved in conjunction with the federal arson charge. Following his release from prison, Crawford will spend three years on supervised release.

COVID Has Killed More

COVID-19 has killed more people in the U.S. in the last 20 months than the swine flu of 2009. That’s according to CDC estimates from December of 2009. Meanwhile the latest estimates for the coronavirus put the death toll in the U.S. at more than 705,000 Americans. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says according to John Hopkins University COVID-19 claimed 13 times more lives than the swine flu in its first year.

But the CDC says the swine flu sickened about 50 million people while more than 44 million have tested positive for COVID-19 in the latest estimates. Puhlmann-Becker says 94 percent of those 65 or older in the U.S. have received at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine and 76 percent of children 1 or older. He says that still leaves a lot of children who haven’t been vaccinated, which is why the rest of us need to be vaccinated, wear face masks, and socially distance ourselves.

Car Show Cruise Contemplated

An organizer for the Watson Street Classic Car Show in Ripon says it will be hard to top last month’s show during Septemberfest. Howard Stibb says the 220 cars that they had in the show was the most ever. But every year they think of ways to improve the show and adding a cruise the night before the show has been suggested by some committee members. The Scoop the Loop downtown cruise event has proven popular since its return a couple years ago. It is now a part of Riponfest 2.0 during August. He says the flyers they take to other car shows help to spread the word and a cruise might appeal to more classic car owners.
