St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waupaca has been able to raise more than $6,300 for Afghan and Haitian refugees. The Episcopal News Service recently shared that story saying six weeks ago, when Afghan and Haitian refugees’ simultaneously required financial assistance, the members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church decided they needed to help. Reverend Julia Hendrix is the rector for St. Mark’s. She says, “We believe that whenever someone is in need, as Christians, we have a duty to make sure that they are cared for.” She added that many small organizations don’t realize that they can have an impact too.” The $6,315 raised by St. Mark’s will go to Episcopal Relief & Development and Episcopal Migration Ministries. Episcopal Relief & Development is the compassionate response of The Episcopal Church to human suffering in the world. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church was founded in Waupaca in 1856. It has 80 members.

Hosting Thanksgiving

Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says the challenge of hosting holiday gatherings during the pandemic has trickled down to his family. He says they’ve held off on inviting family for some holidays during the past 18 months, but this year they were supposed to host the family’s Thanksgiving. But he says even in their family circle there are those who haven’t been vaccinated or are of age that it has put them in a high-risk category, which makes it difficult. He says the members who haven’t been vaccinated feel they shouldn’t attend to keep others from being at risk. He feels many families will be going through the same thing this holiday season.

Proud Of Documentary

The President of SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital and Waupun Memorial Hospital says they are very proud of the work their nurses, doctors and staff provided at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and as it continues today. It was detailed in the 60 minute documentary Behind the Mask which aired on several NBC-TV affiliates in Green Bay, Madison, and Milwaukee last night. DeAnn Thurmer says those health care workers on the front line continue the tradition of help the founding sisters of SSM Health began in St. Louis 150 years ago when they came to America to battle the smallpox epidemic. The documentary features some extraordinary stories of courage, resilience and sacrifice that have occurred across the SSM Health ministries throughout the past 18 months. Thurmer says at the beginning those health care workers didn’t know what they were dealing with so initially there was a lot of fear. The documentary also reminds viewers of those who have been lost to and those who are still suffering from COVID-19.
