Sports for September 15th

Freddy Peralta pitched like Freddy Peralta again, until Mother Nature got in the way. While Milwaukee didn’t make progress in the standings on Tuesday, it wasn’t a total washout for Peralta, who logged six scoreless innings before severe storms interrupted play at Comerica Park for an hour and 49 minutes and knocked the right-hander out of what became a 1-0 loss to the Tigers in 11 innings.

The Brewers’ (89-56) magic number to clinch the National League Central remained frozen at five after the Cardinals (75-69) beat the Mets in extra innings to leap past the Reds (75-70) and into second place in the division. Their magic number to clinch a postseason berth altogether, however, is at four.  Still, it was a productive night — at least on the pitching front — since the Brewers appear to have the third member of their trio of aces rounding into form. Peralta allowed two singles and no runs on 71 pitches over six sharp innings, with no walks and nine strikeouts before the rain came.

The storm offered manager Craig Counsell to turn to his bullpen. Brad BoxbergerDevin WilliamsJosh Hader and Jake Cousins each delivered a scoreless inning, with Williams striking out the side with nasty stuff in the eighth, Hader working around three consecutive one-out walks in a harrowing ninth, and Cousins stranding the automatic runner in the 10th with a sensational assist from Gold Glove second baseman Kolten Wong on a tricky two-out bouncer.

The Brewers were blanked by Wily Peralta and four Detroit relievers, who combined to scatter four hits in 11 scoreless innings. Christian Yelich bounced into a double play with the bases loaded to end the top of the 11th before Hunter Strickland surrendered Derek Hill’s walk-off double to lead off the bottom of the frame, snapping the club’s five-game winning streak.

The Brewers and Tigers meet again this afternoon as a pair of right-handers square off.  Brandon Woodruff (9-8, 2.48 ERA) goes against Matt Manning (3-6, 6.14 ERA). First pitch is at 12:10 and the game can be head on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Pirates edged the Reds 6-5, the Cubs beat the Phillies 6-3 and the Cardinals nipped the Mets 7-6.  The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 13 ½ games and the Reds by 14.

Midwest League (Tues.)

In the Midwest League the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat Great Lakes 6-3.  The T-Rats play again tonight at Great Lakes.

After 14 years with the Milwaukee Brewers, slugger Ryan Braun is retiring from baseball. Braun first took the field for the Brewers on May 25, 2007.

“While it is impossible to summarize my emotions right now, what I feel most is one simple thing: gratitude. And I just wanted to take the time to say thank you,” Braun said in a video posted on Milwaukee Brewers social media accounts.

He says he’ll be in Milwaukee for the last home game of the season on Sunday, Sept. 26. He invited fans to help him celebrate. Braun, 37, was National League Rookie of the Year in 2007, a five-time Silver Slugger, and the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 2011. Braun’s accomplishments were overshadowed in 2012 when he was connected to a clinic that provided performance-enhancing drugs to players.

On July 22, 2013, he was suspended for the remainder of the season after admitting to using performance-enhancing drugs. He came back to the Brewers and finished out his career. Braun is a six-time All-Star with a career 352 home runs and .296 batting average.

After looking at game film Tuesday following their35-3 loss to the Saints on Sunday, the Packers are off today.  Green Bay has a number of things to improve on like a defense that was unable to stop the Saints Jameis Winston from throwing five touchdowns along with  an ineffective rush defense.  Linebacker Krys Barnes was asked what has to be done to stop the run. He said one of the things they have to do is be on the same page with communication when a play is called.  The offense also has to execute a lot better after not getting into any kind of rhythm against New Orleans. The Packers have their home opener Monday night against the Lions, who lost at home to San Francisco 41-33.

If you bought tickets to a canceled 2020 event or show through StubHub, you can now get a full refund. Wisconsin, along with nine other states and the District of Columbia, reached a settlement with the California-based ticket reselling marketplace. State officials say in March 2020, when events were cancelled en masse amid the COVID-19 outbreak, StubHub stopped honoring its refund guarantee. Instead, state officials say StubHub offered customers a 120% credit toward tickets to future events. Following an investigation by the states, in May of this year, StubHub reversed its decision and offered customers the choice of full refunds or the 120% credit. Customers who have not been contacted by the company who believe they are entitled to refunds should contact StubHub at 1-866-788-2482 or the state consumer protection hotline at 1-800-422-7128.
