Sports for September 9th

Eduardo Escobar hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the sixth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers topped the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Wednesday night. Milwaukee, which won the final two games of the series after dropping the opener, extended its lead to 12 games in the NL Central over Cincinnati, which lost 4-1 to the Chicago Cubs. Philadelphia remained 2 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta. Escobar drove an 0-1 pitch from Connor Brogdon (5-4) deep to right for his 25th homer. The infielder was acquired in a July trade with Arizona.

Milwaukee’s bullpen covered 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Freddy Peralta. Alan Ashby (2-0) got six outs and Brad Boxberger pitched a perfect seventh. Devin Williams worked the eighth before Josh Hader closed it out for his 30th save in 31 opportunities.

Bryce Harper hit his 29th homer for Philadelphia in the first, but Milwaukee responded with two runs in the bottom half. Kolten Wong singled and scored on Omar Narváez’s one-out double off Kyle Gibson. Consecutive walks by Luis Urias and Daniel Vogelbach forced in another run. Gibson escaped the bases-loaded jam by striking out Lorenzo Cain and Jackie Bradley Jr. The Brewers made it 3-1 in the second when Peralta singled, moved to third on Wong’s double and scored on Christian Yelich’s infield hit.

Philadelphia tied it with two unearned runs in third. The Phillies loaded the bases on singles by Travis Jankowski and Odubel Herrera around an error on Gibson’s attempted sacrifice bunt. Harper walked to force in a run and J.T. Realmuto followed with an RBI fielder’s choice. It was the second consecutive abbreviated start for Peralta since a stint on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. He allowed three runs, one earned, and four hits in 3 2/3 innings.

After an off day, Milwaukee is at Cleveland for three games. RHP Adrian Houser (8-6, 3.41 ERA) starts Friday night for the Brewers against RHP Eli Morgan (2-6, 5.48 ERA).

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Tigers beat the Pirates 5-1, the Cubs downed the Reds 4-1 and the Cardinals nipped the Dodgers 5-4. The Brewers increased their lead over the Reds to 12 games in the division. The Brewer magic number for clinching the NL Central is down to 10 games.

Former Brewer Ted Simmons was one of the four players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Wednesday in Cooperstown, New York. The others were Yankees star Derek Jeter, Larry Walker and the late Marvin Miller.  The 72-year-old Simmons, who starred in a 21-year career with the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee and Atlanta, punctuated his speech to thank four pioneers of free agency — Curt Flood, Catfish Hunter, Andy Messersmith, and Marvin Miller — “who changed the lives of every player on this stage today by pushing the boundaries of player rights.”  The virus forced the Hall of Fame to cancel last year’s ceremony and this year’s was moved from its customary slot on a Sunday in late July to a midweek date.

The Packers continue to practice for Sunday’s season-opener at Jacksonville against the New Orleans Saints.  Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers acknowledges this season feels different because of the uncertainty surrounding how much longer he and some teammates might remain in Green Bay.

But Rodgers doesn’t believe those questions will hinder his focus as the reigning MVP heads into his 17th season with the Packers.

“The feel I get with the energy in the locker room is not pressure. It’s focus,” Rodgers said. “I think it’s the right perspective and the right type of focus. We know we have a talented team. We know what the expectations are. We’re just focusing on accountability and holding each other accountable because regardless of what happens with any of our situations, this group will not be together the way it is now in years down the line. We’re going to enjoy this year for all it has to offer, and each other and I think that’s the right perspective to have in this situation.”

Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. Sunday and the pregame starts at 1:00 on FM 103. WAUH.

The NFL season kicks off tonight as Dallas plays at Tampa Bay against the defending Super Bowl Champs and quarterback Tom Brady.

Novak Djokovic ceded the opening set for the third consecutive match at Flushing Meadows — and ninth time at a major in 2021 — but it didn’t matter, because he quickly corrected his strokes and beat No. 6 seed Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in a quarterfinal that began Wednesday night and concluded after midnight Thursday.

In men’s soccer Wednesday Marian University downed Ripon College 4-0.
