Homeless Man Charged For High Speed Chase In Campbellsport

Campbellsport Police Department photo of Eric Haugen

A 47-year-old homeless man is charged for allegedly leading Campbellsport’s Police Chief on a high-speed chase on August 21st. Eric Haugen (also pictured at top) is charged with felony eluding and resisting or obstructing an officer. Bond was set at $500 cash and he will be back in Fond du Lac County court for a preliminary hearing October 7th. According to the criminal complaint Campbellsport Police Chief Tom Dornbrook saw Haugen driving a motorcycle through a construction zone in the city and tried to pull him over to tell him not to drive so fast on the road which was just dirt and gravel due to the construction. Haugen took off accelerating when he got to a paved portion of the road. The 5.5 mile chase was cut off when Haugen entered Washington County. Dornbrook estimated Haugen was going at least 120 miles an hour at one point. Because he’s homeless Haugen was difficult to track down, but was located at a home and storage unit in Kewaskum on September 21st.  Haugen came out of hiding when Dornbrook announced over his squad car PA system that unless he came out his pickup truck was going to be towed and a Washington County Sheriff’s K9 would come to search for him.

Beaver Dam Woman Sentenced For Cocaine Trafficking

A 48-year-old Beaver Dam woman has been sentenced to 4 years in prison and 4 years of extended supervision on cocaine trafficking, cocaine possession and felony bail jumping charges. Gidget Wheeler was also given 3 years of probation, but due to new cocaine-related charges her probation was revoked. In September of 2017 the Dodge County Drug Task Force was investigating a possible drug dealer in Beaver Dam. Wheeler was the suspect and twice sold crack cocaine to a confidential informant. She was busted a month later during a traffic stop during which crack cocaine was found in her vehicle.

Ripon Common Council Approves Funding For Lead Service Line Replacement Program

The Ripon Common Council this week approved an agreement with the DNR for a $100,000 Safe Drinking Water Loan that will allow the city to reimburse property owners for up to $5,000 for the cost of replacing lead service lines to their homes. Schools and certified day care centers are also eligible for the money. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the one caveat is the money has to be used this year so property owners would have to get the work done before the end of the year and submit the proper paperwork to be reimbursed. The city has lined up 3 pre-qualified contractors to do the work. Sonntag says it will be a good trial run for the city on the money because they will be applying for even more money through the program next year to get additional lead service lines replaced. The city will take care of the city-owned portion of those lines to homes. Details about the program can be found on the city website under the Water Department tab.

OASD Continues Masking Policy To November 5th

The Oshkosh Area School District will continue to require all students, staff and visitors to wear face coverings inside all district buildings through Friday, November 5th. District Superintendent Bryan Davis says the district remains committed to providing in-person instruction in a healthy and safe environment. The district has been able to keep all schools open with in-person learning by focusing on its mitigation measures and using a new on-site testing program, along with targeted moves to virtual learning for one week for a handful of elementary school classrooms district-wide to prevent COVID-19 spread.

Portion Of Highway 23 Expansion Project Complete

The state’s Department of Transportation tells us a major part of construction on the State Highway 23 project to improve 7.4 miles of the highway from the Sheboygan/Fond du Lac County line to County P in Sheboygan County is complete. The work was part of the 19.1 mile four lane expansion project that will conclude in Fond du Lac County next year. The westbound lanes in Sheboygan County are open to two lanes of traffic today, and the eastbound lane closure will be removed by the end of the day. After the eastbound lanes are open, the speed limit from the Fond du Lac/Sheboygan County line to State Highway 57 will change from 55 miles an hour to 65 miles an hour.

COVID Precautions Encouraged

The president of the Ripon Medical Center and Waupun Memorial Hospital encourages people to take precautions against COVID-19 beyond getting vaccinated to prevent the spread of the pandemic. DeAnn Thurmer says at the two SSM Health facilities they screen everyone coming in, but they also wear face masks, practice social distancing, and use hand sanitizer and would encourage the public to do the same. She says she knows people are tired of wearing the face masks, but they are effective against the spread. Thurmer says if their hospital beds are filled with COVID patients they can’t get to elective surgeries and other procedures that patients who don’t have the virus need.

Animal Harm Bill

A bill State Senator Joan Ballweg is backing would increase penalties for those who intentionally cause harm to an animal. The state lawmaker from Markesan says there are already penalties for someone who causes a pet or animal’s death through neglect or mistreatment, but this would include penalties for those who intentionally caused harm. Ballweg hopes new penalties will provide a deterrent to animal cruelty. She says there are options if you no longer want to own a pet or animal like animal shelters which usually have a dedicated staff of workers and volunteers.

Tom Nelson

Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson’s new book One Day Stronger: How One Union Local Saved a Mill and Changed an Industry-And What It Means for American Manufacturing will be the focus of a panel discussion tonight at Ripon College. The Center for Politics and the People is sponsoring the program and it will run from 6:30 to 7:45 pm in the Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall.
