Drive Sober Don’t Get Pulled Over

Motorists are reminded on this busy holiday weekend that law enforcement agencies are taking part in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through Labor Day. Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt asks residents to eliminate driving under the influence as an option to get home instead using a designated driver, call a cab, or find someone to drive you home. Last year in Wisconsin there were 6,050 alcohol-related crashes, including 167 deaths. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 3 of the 9 fatal crashes in Fond du Lac County last year. Last year there were also 2,250 drug-related crashes that caused 80 deaths in Wisconsin.

Milwaukee Man Sentenced For Trying To Smuggle Phone Into Fox Lake Prison

A Dodge County judge Thursday sentenced a 54-year-old Milwaukee man to 12 months of probation for trying to smuggle a cell phone to an inmate at Fox Lake Correctional Institution. Prosecutors say Steven Robertson tried to mail the cell phone to an inmate at the prison by using the return address of a Milwaukee law firm thinking it would keep prison officials from opening the package. But a mailroom officer used an x-ray machine on the envelope which revealed a rectangular metal object inside. Managing Attorney Robert Barrington says a cell phone is one of the most dangerous things that can be smuggled into a prison because an inmate can use it to arrange having drugs or even a weapon smuggled in from outside the prison.

Unemployment Scam Warning

If you receive a text message regarding unemployment insurance, be cautious about clicking on any links. The state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has received reports of phishing text where imposters pretend to be from the state’s Department of Workforce Development or a similar agency. The texts claim that there is a problem with your account and that your benefits will be discontinued if you do not click on the link to update your account ID and password. However they are imposters trying to get your personally identifiable information to steal your identity and your money. You should delete those texts. The DWD does not send such text messages to claimants.

Vaccinations Pick Up After Vaccine Authorization

A member of the Ripon Community COVID 19 Task Force says something finally happened to move the needle on the number of people receiving vaccinations for the coronavirus. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says vaccinations have gone up by 17 percent since the FDA gave final approval to Pfizer’s vaccine. He says apparently some people who said they would get the vaccine when the drug got final authorization were as good as their word. He says on the other hand many employers including Agnesian are requiring their employees to be vaccinated. Another factor could also be the uptick in cases due to the highly contagious Delta variant of the virus.

Relay App Discontinued In Oshkosh

The Relay App platform Oshkosh residents were using to report non-emergency incidents to officers was deactivated Wednesday. The Police Department was informed by Relay staff that due to business related matters, the Relay platform was deactivated. The department received a lot of positive feedback from residents about Relay and feels having a mobile application in which citizens can report non-emergency incidents is a valuable tool. The department will begin researching other platforms to replace Relay and hope to offer a similar mobile application in the near future.
