Sports for August 20th

Corbin Burnes took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Kolten Wong had three hits and was hit by a pitch against his former team as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Tuesday night. Burnes (8-4) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three in six innings. He is 6-0 in his last 13 starts and has not lost since May 25, against San Diego. Brad Boxberger and Devin Williams each pitched an inning of relief before Josh Hader pitched the ninth and earned his 24th save in 25 chances. Milwaukee is 41-20 on the road this season and 16-2 in its last 18 games away from American Family Field.

Adam Wainwright (11-7) allowed just two runs in six innings despite surrendering nine hits and two walks. Milwaukee left 13 runners on base and lost another when Wong was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base on Eduardo Escobar’s first inning single to left field. Wong put Milwaukee up 1-0 with a two out bloop double to left field that fell between Tyler O’Neill, Nolan Arenado, and Edmundo Sosa, scoring Rowdy Telez in the top of the second inning. Omar Narváez drove in Christian Yelich with a double down the right field line to push the lead to 2-0. Tommy Edman broke up Burnes’ no-hit bid with a single to left field in the sixth inning. Paul Goldschmidt followed with a single to center, moving Edman to third. Burnes then got Nolan Arenado and Tyler O’Neill to pop out in foul territory to end the threat and the inning.

Tonight, Brewers RHP Freddy Peralta (9-3, 2.26 ERA)  starts for Milwaukee.  He has a 1.85 ERA over his last 15 starts. He will oppose Cardinals RHP Jack Flaherty (9-1, 2.65 ERA), who is 3-6 with a 5.21 ERA in 13 career starts against Milwaukee. First pitch is at 6:45 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Cubs nipped the Reds 2-1 and the Dodgers slipped past the Pirates 4-3. The Brewers increased their lead over the Reds to 8 ½ games while the Cardinals are 11 games out, the Cubs 21 and the Pirates are 31 games off the pace.

The Packers and their Saturday opponents, the New York Jets, have their first of two scheduled practices today  The public workout starts at 10:10.  Saturday’s game starts at 3:25.

In other team news, cornerback Josh Jackson has been traded. On Tuesday, the Packers traded the 2018 2nd round pick to the Giants for cornerback Isaac Yiadom.   Yiadom was a 3rd round pick in the same draft class as Jackson. Jackson had a promising rookie season in 2018, playing in every game, starting 10. He posted 13 passes defensed, 2nd most on the team, to go along with 37 solo tackles. He also recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown. But Jackson has been on a steady decline since, starting just 5 games the last two seasons combined. He was also inactive 4 times in the final 6 games last season, and was not on the roster for either playoff game. Jackson also struggled in the preseason opener last Saturday against the Texans, and he appeared to a longshot to make the roster coming out of training camp.

Former Packers quarterback and NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre is now urging parents to not allow their children to play tackle football until they are 14-year-old. His message is part of a new Public Service Announcement with the Concussion Legacy Foundation.

“I could already have CTE. And it will continue to destroy my brain, even after I stopped playing. So by the time I’m your age, I could be fighting depression, struggling to keep my thoughts straight, I can become violent, even towards my own children,” says Favre in the PSA.

The PSA aims to educate parents on research showing their child’s odds of developing CTE double every additional three years they play tackle football.  A new study shows that 25% of high school football players who never played in college, or professional football, have CTE, and all but 1% of that group started playing tackle football before the age of 14.
