Corbin Burnes, who pitched into the seventh inning, struck out nine and singled home a run as Milwaukee led wire to wire in a 3-1 victory over the Giants in their series opener Monday night in San Francisco. It was a bullpen game for the Giants after San Francisco placed starters Johnny Cueto and Alex Wood on the injured list. Burnes carried a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, when Brandon Belt doubled over Avisaíl García’s head to spark a Giants rally that brought reliever Brad Boxberger into the game. He allowed one inherited runner to score, but that was it, and Devin Williams and Josh Hader finished the Brewers’ 80th victory with Hader pitching the 9th inning and picking up his 28th save.
That came after more good work from Burnes (9-4), who was charged with one run on four hits in six-plus innings, with no walks and nine strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 2.27, second-best among Major League qualifiers to the Dodgers’ Walker Buehler (2.02). Burnes leads qualified MLB pitchers in strikeouts per nine innings (12.24), strikeouts to walks ratio (7.27) and FIP (1.58).
Catcher Omar Narváez drove in the Brewers’ run in the first inning before Burnes singled home another in the second.
The teams meet again tonight as Brandon Woodruff (8-7, 2.38 ERA) starts for Milwaukee. The Giants have not yet named a starting pitcher. First pitch is at 8:45 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

The minor league season is quickly winding down, and one of the Brewers newest big name prospects will wrap up 2021 with the Timber Rattlers. The Brewers have promoted 2021 first round pick Sal Frelick to the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. It’s Frelick’s third minor league team since being picked 15th overall by Milwaukee back in mid-July. Frelick was sent first to the AZL Brewers and was 7-for-15 in four games of rookie ball. He was then promoted to the Low-A Carolina Mudcats. Frelick finished with an 1.085 OPS while driving in 12 RBIs with a home run with Carolina. Those numbers helped Frelick move up to the Brewers number two prospect, according to MLB Pipeline’s midseason report. The Brewers top overall prospect, outfielder Garrett Mitchell, started the season with Wisconsin and was later promoted to Doubld-A Biloxi. Frelick will make his Timber Rattlers debut on Tuesday August 31st as Wisconsin opens their final 12 game homestand against Beloit.
Final cuts come down later today as the Packers will get down to the 53 player roster limit for the regular season.
