Sports for August 24th
After an off-day Monday the Brewers are back in action tonight hosting the Cincinnati Reds at American Family Field. Tyler Mahle (10-4, 3.78 ERA) starts for the Reds against fellow righty Corbin Burnes (8-4, 2.13 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
There were two games Monday in the NL Central as the Cubs beat the Rockies 6-4 and the Pirates edged the Diamondbacks 6-5. The Brewers lead the Reds by 7 ½ games in the division and the Cardinals by 12.
Quarterback Jordan Love returned to the field at the Packers’ training camp practice Monday, taking part in individual drills only, not taking any 11-on-11 work. Coach Matt LaFleur has said that was the plan, with hopes that Love can do more extensive work on Tuesday.
Also Monday, the Packers made some roster moves ahead of Tuesday’s 3:00 p.m. deadline to trim the roster to 80 players. Green Bay offically announced it has released TE Daniel Crawford. Green Bay also reportedly released 2nd-year ILB Kamal Martin, who was last year’s 5th-round draft pick. According to the Baltimore Sun, the Packers are also trading CB Ka’Dar Hollman to the Texans for a 2022 7th-round draft pick.
On the offensive line in practice, rookie Royce Newman and veteran Lucas Patrick were seen swapping reps at left guard and right guard.
Roster hopefuls from the un-drafted ranks are looking forward to Saturday’s final preseason game against the Bills to make their final arguments for roster spots. Head Coach Matt LaFleur said players are well aware of the opportunity they have before the final cuts.
The third-year Packer head coach says he feels confident his offense will be ready despite no preseason game action.
Wisconsin is the favorite in the Big Ten West after going 4-3 and finishing third in the division last year. The No. 12 Badgers had two games canceled because of COVID-19 issues and were plagued by injuries. They return quarterback Graham Mertz and plenty of experience at other positions.
Meanwhile, the Big Ten is the latest Power Five conference to announce that a team must forfeit if it doesn’t have enough players available for a league game because of COVID-19. The Big Ten said the team that forfeits will be assessed a loss in the conference standings and its opponent will be credited with a win. If both teams are unable to compete on the date of a scheduled conference game because of COVID-19, and the game can’t be rescheduled, it will be considered a no contest. The Power Five conferences appear headed toward having similar forfeit policies.
