Sports for August 20th

The Cardinals beat the Brewers in Saint Louis Thursday night 8-4 to salvage the final game of their three game series.  The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning but the Brewers scored four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. But Milwaukee’s pitching fell apart in the fifth as St. Louis erupted for 5 runs sparked by Tyler O’Neill’s 3-run homer, his 21st,  off starter Brandon Woodruff.  The next hitter Lars Nootbaar followed with a solo shot, his third of the season. The Cardinals added single runs in the sixth and seventh for the final score. Woodruff (7-7) went 5 innings, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1.  Cardinals starter Jon Lester lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits. Junior Fernandez (1-0) picked up the win. The Brewers return home tonight to host the Nationals.  Washington has not announced their starter while the Brewers send left-hander Brett Anderson (4-6) to the mound.  First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Thursday the Reds beat the Marlins 6-1.  The Brewers lead the Reds by 8 ½ games in the division while the Cardinals are 11 games out.

The Packers and Jets finished their second and last scrimmage Thursday.  Meanwhile,  quarterback Jordan Love hasn’t practiced this week and probably won’t play in Green Bay’s exhibition game Saturday against the New York Jets.  If Love doesn’t play for Green Bay, the Packers’ quarterbacks for the game will be Kurt Benkert and Jake Dolegala, who returned to the Packers this week after getting waived on July 27. LaFleur has said he doesn’t plan to use reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers in any preseason games.

Love hurt his right shoulder late in the second quarter of a 26-7 preseason loss to the Houston Texans when Jonathan Greenard came from his blind side to sack him and force a fumble.

“I don’t want to rule him out yet, but I’d say it’s probably unlikely,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday before a joint practice with the Jets.

On the other side there is Jets reserve quarterback James Morgan, who made his pro debut last week, frequently attended Packers training camp while growing up near Green Bay in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. He spent the past two days working against the Packers and now has a chance to play at Lambeau Field.

The kickoff is at 3:25 Saturday with the pregame starting at 1:00 on FM 102.3 FM, WAUH, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football the Patriots shut out the Eagles in Philadelphia 35-0.  There are two games tonight as Cincinnati is at Washington and Arizona is at home against Kansas City.
