Oshkosh School Board Meeting Goes Virtual
The Oshkosh School Board met last night, but this time there weren’t interruptions from people protesting the district’s face mask policy. The board walked out of the previous meeting because of the number of protestors who weren’t wearing masks and refused to even when asked by a police officer. After about 30 minutes the board returned and postponed the meeting. This time the meeting was virtual and only three people signed up to comment on the policy, which the board will look at again late next month. Prior to the public comment period last night Board President Bob Poeschl addressed the need to be civil.
Church Scam
Police in Markesan say scammers are doing their research on local churches and organizations getting names of those involved with the church then using them for their own selfish ends. Two recent attempts involved local churches where the scammer sends an email or text message posing as the pastor or a friend asking for assistance to help a family member or church member. They ask you to purchase gift cards to help. Police say the scammer will know your name and information making it sound believable. They advise actually checking with the real person to make sure the request is legitimate and if it is not to contact friends, family and church members to make them aware of the scam.
Senior Center Trailhead Project Progressing
Ripon City Administrator Adam Sonntag says about half of the $2.2 million in funding is in place for the Senior Center/Trailhead building in Murray Park, but the project is moving forward with approval for architectural designs. He says they will try and make as many improvements to the park as they can as part of the project including adding trails and improving the baseball diamonds. Of the funding that’s already in place is nearly half a million dollars from the Mitchell estate and $550,000 from a community development block grant. Sonntag says they also hope to get a Stewardship Grant from the DNR and can use American Rescue Plan Act money towards it.
Vaccine Approval Important
A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says now that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is fully approved by the FDA he’s hoping it will convince more people to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says some people were leery about getting vaccinated with a vaccine that hadn’t been fully approved, but now they don’t have that excuse. Health experts are blaming the latest spike in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant on the unvaccinated because the overwhelming majority of cases involve those who didn’t get vaccinated.
CWD Meeting In Green Lake County Tonight
The DNR and Green Lake County Deer Advisory Council will hold a public information meeting on the detection and response plan to chronic wasting disease or CWD. It was found in a dead deer in the Town of Brooklyn in May. The meeting will be held at the American Legion Post at 518 Water Street in Green Lake tonight at 6 pm. The DNR is seeking assistance sampling harvested deer during upcoming seasons and is asking landowners to report sick deer. Additional free surveillance permits will be available to willing landowners within a targeted 5-mile local area after the hunting seasons.
School Safety
The School Resource Officer for the Ripon Police Department reminds drivers that starting this week they will have to be on the lookout once again for kids in school zones. Lindsey Michels says orientation was Monday and Today with school beginning on Wednesday. Drivers should watch for the presence of kids in school zones around the start of school and when it lets out for the day. She says kids too need to know the rules when it comes to keeping safe when walking to and from school so it wouldn’t be a bad idea for their parents to have a brief talk with them about it.
