FDL Drug Dealer Sentenced To Prison
A 28-year-old Fond du Lac man was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison and 8 years of extended supervision on heroin and cocaine trafficking charges, the heroin charge stemming from one of the largest heroin seizures in Fond du Lac’s history. Torry Howard pleaded “no contest” to the heroin and cocaine trafficking charges in May in Fond du Lac County court. According to the criminal complaint police learned of a large heroin supply being brought from Detroit to Fond du Lac on February 5th of last year. They recovered a third of a pound of heroin, half a pound of cocaine and marijuana from a vehicle stopped in the city. The combined street value was estimated at $71,000. The other suspect in the case 23-year-old Demetri Howard of Fond du Lac returns to court September 8th for a plea and sentencing hearing.
Fatal Accident In Waupaca County
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in an accident on State Highway 110 at County Highway C in Waupaca County Thursday night that claimed the life of the driver. Sheriff’s officials say a vehicle was traveling north on State Highway 110 when it left the road, entered the ditch and rolled several times. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was ejected and died at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marion Police Department, Marion Fire Department, Clintonville/Marion Ambulance and the Waupaca County Medical Examiner’s Office. The accident was reported shortly after 8:30 Thursday night.
Five Injured In Dodge County Accident
Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highways 16 and 60 and County Highway TT in Dodge County’s Town of Elba Friday afternoon. The crash involved a 2006 Subaru and a 2021 Mitsubishi. All five of the injured were taken by ambulance or flown to the UW-Hospital in Madison. The Subaru had 4 occupants. The 31-year-old driver was seriously injured and a 10-year-old front seat passenger suffered life-threatening injuries. Four and 5-year-old rear seat passengers suffered minor injuries. The 40-year-old driver and sole occupant of the Mitsubishi was seriously injured. The crash occurred at approximately 4:47 pm Friday afternoon.
Highway 175 Project Starts In FDL County
A $2.3 million project to improve 7.1 miles of State Highway 175 in Fond du Lac County begins today. Improvements will be made to a stretch that extends from the south Fond du Lac County line in the Town of Byron to US Highway 151 in the city of Fond du Lac. The project should be completed in mid-October. A full closure of State Highway 175 will take place during the first portion of construction or through mid-September. Access will be maintained to businesses and property owners in the work zone. Traffic will be detoured using I-41, US 151 and State Highway 49. From mid-September to October State Highway 175 will be open to traffic with lane closures and flagging operations.
Coronavirus Grant Approval Sought
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office has released more information about a jail remodeling project that is on the County Board’s agenda for approval tomorrow night. The Sheriff’s Department would like to accept a $148.000 Coronavirus grant which would be used to remodel and update a specific area o the jail. The monies will be used to update existing single cells by removing the metal meshwork and replace it with a correctional safety glass. The plexiglass material is much more effective than the existing mesh material in creating a physical barrier between inmates who are placed in quarantine as part of the admission process. It would help to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19 in the jail.
ThedaCare Continues Visitor Restrictions
ThedaCare is continuing its heightened visitor restrictions for COVID-19. Restrictions remain in place at hospitals in Appleton, Berlin, Neenah, New London, Shawano, Waupaca and Wild Rose. Among those restrictions no visitors for COVID-positive patients with few exceptions, non-COVID patients may have one visitor at a time during normal visiting hours. One parent or guardian is allowed to accompany a minor. Adult patients who need care may enter with their children if childcare cannot be arranged. Those experiencing COVID-19 symptoms are asked not to visit and face masks are required.
Community Resource Fair Scheduled In FDL
Fond du Lac County’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Fond du Lac Library Literacy Program in Fond du Lac will be holding a Community Resource Fair from 4 to 7 pm on September 29th. It will be held at St. Mary’s Church basement at 59 East Merrill Avenue. It’s free and no registration is required. Those attending can learn about, education, employment, English, housing, immigration, taxes, and U.S. laws. To prevent the spread of the virus, face coverings are required. COVID-19 vaccines will be available.
