Oshkosh Man Sentenced In Child’s Death

A 36-year-old Oshkosh man was sentenced this week to 15 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision on a reckless homicide charge. Freddy Colon was sentenced in Winnebago County court Tuesday on the charge stemming from an incident in December of 2018 in which a 10-month-old boy he was caring for suffered a severe head injury, brain swelling and a skull fracture.  Colon entered a no contest plea to the charge during a hearing in June. The reckless homicide charge was reduced from the original charge of neglecting a child resulting in death as part of a plea agreement.

Unemployment Rates Fall

Unemployment rates in area counties dropped by up to six-tenths of a percent from June to the end of July. According to Federal Labor statistics Dodge County’s jobless rate fell to 3.3 percent last month. Fond du Lac and Winnebago County each had a 3.5 percent rate and Waupaca County had a 3.7 percent unemployment rate. The rate was a little higher in Waushara County where it was 4.2 percent and in Green Lake County it was 4.6 percent. In the City of Oshkosh it was at 3.6 percent by the end of July and in Fond du Lac 4.2 percent. Seventy-one of the state’s 72 counties had lower jobless rates last month.

Wisconsin Farmer Wellness Hotline

State Senator Joan Ballweg says if farmers are experiencing anxiety or depression they can call the 24/7 Wisconsin Farmer Wellness Hotline. It was set up through the Wisconsin Farm Center through the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. She says she learned from her work on the Suicide Prevention Task Force that people want to talk to someone like themselves when they are in crisis so the hotline is manned by people who can talk to farmers. She says funding was available to keep the hotline going.  She says if farmer need additional help there are vouchers to pay for therapy sessions. The phone number for the Wisconsin Farmer Wellness Hotline is 1-888-901-2558.

100 Dollar Shot Incentive

Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says a $100 incentive for people to get their first coronavirus vaccination will attract some interest from those who have been putting off the shots. He says other incentive programs including a lottery in some states have seen success. Those who get their first shot by Labor Day will receive a $100 Visa Gift Card once they get the shot and register at 100.wisconsin.gov.  You have to be 12 years old or older to get the shot. Puhlmann-Becker says those who have already completed their shots shouldn’t feel cheated. He says the peace of mind they have over the protection the vaccinations provide is easily worth more than $100 bucks.

Toney Gets Winnebago County Sheriff’s Endorsement In AG Race

Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz has announced that he is endorsing Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney in his bid to become the next Attorney General for the State of Wisconsin. Sheriff Matz joins more than 60 law enforcement officials who’ve endorsed District Attorney Toney, the only frontline prosecutor in the race for attorney general. Sheriff Matz said Toney was the one candidate to restore law and order in Wisconsin. Toney says if he is elected attorney general on day one he will store the cuts Josh Kaul made to the criminal prosecution unit at the Department of Justice. He says criminals have been getting a free pass under Kaul’s lack of leadership.

Home Dialysis An Option Now

The Director of Outpatient Services for Waupun Memorial Hospital says it is not for everyone, but some people getting hemodialysis could be candidates for their new home dialysis program. Diane Posthuma says they currently offer in-center dialysis programs at SSM Health hospitals in Waupun, Fond du Lac, and Beaver Dam but their Fond du Lac Center is also now offering an in-home treatment program. She says patients are trained how to put needles into themselves for the blood-cleansing process that dialysis does. She says one of the benefits is at home the treatments are only about 2 ½ hours a day 5 days a week versus 4 hours a day 3 days a week. She says they’ve found that the in-home program has benefits like a reduction in medications including high-blood pressure medication and patients experience less stress. To find out more about the program call 920-923-2333.

Last Call For Kallin

The last of Winnebago County’s original 9-1-1 dispatchers retired yesterday. Dennis Kallin retired after 43 years of dispatching for police, fire, ambulance and rescue calls. Kallin was there when the County began its 9-1-1 program. He read a statement while signing off just before 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon saying he was doing so with mixed emotions. Sheriff’s officials say Kallin has run through the gamut of emotions responding to 9-1-1 calls laughing and grieving with those who called for help. He’s also seen a number of changes over his four decades on the job as the Communications Center has been located in three different buildings and gone through a number of upgrades. A video of Kallin’s farewell message is posted on the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Facebook page.
