Sports for July 6th

Pete Alonso broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run double off All-Star Brandon Woodruff, and the New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Monday night in a matchup of National League division leaders.  Edwin Díaz pitched out of trouble in the ninth, retiring three straight batters with two on after giving up an RBI single to Tyrone Taylor. Michael Conforto added an RBI single and Dominic Smith had a sacrifice fly for the Mets, who managed only one hit against an efficient Woodruff (7-4) through six innings. Still, they improved to 25-11 at Citi Field with another stingy pitching performance — New York began the day with a 2.08 ERA at home that was best in the majors — and reached the midpoint of the season with a 44-37 record.

Rookie right-hander Tylor Megill  allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out seven in five impressive innings. Omar Narváez homered for the Brewers, who won 11 straight before a 2-0 loss Sunday in Pittsburgh. Milwaukee entered with the best record in baseball (30-11) since May 22 and the largest cushion (seven games) of any first-place club.  The Brewers also had won eight of the past nine games and 16 of the last 22 between the teams.  Seth Lugo (2-1) struck out two in a perfect seventh, and Díaz earned his 18th save in 19 opportunities. After putting his first three batters on, the closer struck out Jace Peterson and Keston Hiura before Jackie Bradley Jr. flied out to end it.

Hiura fanned all four times up. Narváez connected off Megill in the fourth, but the Mets responded immediately. Woodruff had retired his first nine batters, striking out five, before Brandon Nimmo doubled leading off the Mets fourth. He advanced on a sacrifice bunt by  shortstop Francisco Lindor and scored on Smith’s sac fly. Lindor drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and dashed to third on Smith’s single. Alonso, who homered in both ends of a day-night doubleheader the Mets split Sunday at Yankee Stadium, lined the next pitch into left field.  One out later, Conforto snapped an 0-for-13 skid with a run-scoring single to right.

In other Brewers news, outfielder Lorenzo Cain (strained right hamstring) is scheduled to leave the team Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville that will extend past the All-Star break.

Mets ace Jacob deGrom (7-2) looks to lower his major league-best 0.95 ERA in the middle game of the series Tuesday night. Brett Anderson (2-5. 4.69) is scheduled to come off the injured list for Milwaukee. The left-hander last started June 21 at Arizona, exiting after 31 pitches because of a bruised right knee.  First pitch is at 6:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In other games Monday in the NL Central, the Cardinals beat the Giants 5-3, the Phillies pounded the Cubs 13-3 and the Reds defeated the Royals 6-2.  The Brewers lead the Reds by 6 games in the division, the Cubs are 8 ½ out, the Cardinals 9 and the Pirates are 19 games out.

No games were scheduled in the Midwest League on Monday.

North Wood League (Mon.)

Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 7, Rockford Rivets 6-Fond du Lac hosts Madison tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.

The Milwaukee Bucks have listed MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo as doubtful for the first game of the NBA Finals. The listing is the third consecutive game where Antetokounmpo has been listed as doubtful. He ended up not playing during the last two games against the Atlanta Hawks, however the Bucks rallied and were able to defeat the Hawks during both of those matchups, propelling them to the team’s first NBA Finals appearance since 1974.  Giannis hyperextended his knee in the third quarter of Game 4 against Atlanta. ntetokounmpo has averaged 28.2 points, 12.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists in the postseason.  Although the Suns won by a single point in each of their two regular-season games with Milwaukee, they didn’t have an answer for Antetokounmpo in either of those two contests. He scored 47 against the Suns in Phoenix and 33 against them in Milwaukee.

Reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers says he has spent this offseason focusing on improving himself in every respect, and that goes beyond making sure he’s in top physical shape. Rodgers says he also is trying to improve his “spiritual self” as well as his mental health. He says that includes trying to think about what puts him in the best frame of mind.Rodgers didn’t participate in Green Bay’s mandatory minicamp last month amid reports that he doesn’t want to return to the Packers.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson, hot off his sixth major win at the 2021 PGA Championship last week, will be the preeminent golf star in another edition of “The Match” exhibition series. Lefty and Tom Brady will square off against Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers in the latest celebrity golf event today,  Previously, Mickelson played solo against Tiger Woods in the first version of “The Match” before joining Brady to face Woods and Peyton Manning this time last year. In the fall, Mickelson joined forces with Charles Barkley as they beat Stephen Curry and Manning. The format remains familiar. The four golfers will play modified alternate shot match play as players will be mic’d up throughout the event. One wrinkle this time around is that the golf course is at 7,500 feet of elevation, which means DeChambeau will be attempting 450-yard drives throughout. There’s a 777-yard par-5 hole where he will likely try to drive the green.

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs (Mon.)

Montreal 3, Tampa Bay 2 (Tampa Bay leads 3-1)-Game 3 is Wednesday at Tampa  Bay.

Chase Elliott won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Road America on Sunday to continue his uncanny success on road courses and wrap up a playoff spot. Kyle Busch took a brief lead on a restart on the 46th of 62 laps, but Elliott caught up to him at Turn 11 and had passed him by Turn 12. The restart followed a caution that came when Anthony Alfredo spun off course. Elliott stayed in front the rest of the way for his second road-course victory of the year and seventh overall. He won by 5.705 seconds over Christopher Bell. Busch was third, followed by Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin. Elliott won after starting way back in the 34th position as a couple of cautions hampered his qualifying attempts.
