Sports for July 23rd

Thousands of fans lined downtown Milwaukee streets on Thursday to catch a glimpse of their Bucks in a parade to celebrate the city’s first NBA championship in half a century. Fans could be heard chanting, “Bucks in 6.”  Six police officers on horseback clopped past cheering fans at the head of a procession that included a hook-and-ladder fire truck, occasionally blaring its horn, and open-air buses and flatbed trucks carrying Bucks stars including Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday, as well as the trophy they captured Tuesday night with a Game 6 victory over Phoenix.  Governor Tony Evers briefly addressed the crowd as did city and county leaders, team officials and players. The parade ended up in the “Deer District” where an estimated 100,000 people gathered to watch Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

The Brewers return to action tonight hosting the Chicago White Sox at American Family Field in the first game of a weekend series.  The Royals completed a two-game sweep of the Brewers at American Family Field. A pair of right-handers square off as Lucas Giolito (8-6, 3.90 ERA and 135 strikeouts) goes against Freddy Peralta (7-3, 2.39 ERA and 135 strikouts).  First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.  It will be a matchup of two divisional leaders.  The White Sox lead the AL Central by 9 games over second-place Cleveland while the Brewers lead the Reds by 6 ½ game in the NL Central, 7 games over St. Louis, 9 games over the Cubs and 19 ½ over Pittsburgh.

There was just one game In the NL Central yesterday as the Cardinals edged the Cubs at home 3-2.

In the Midwest League on Thursday, South Bend beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-4 at Fox Cities Stadium.  The T-Rats host South Bend again tonight.

In North Woods League action on Thursday, in their first day of action following the NWL All-Star break, the Dock Spiders fell in both games of their doubleheader at Witter Field against the Rafters. With each game consisting of seven-innings each, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders were defeated by the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in game one, 6-4, and game two, 7-2.  The Dock Spiders (31-19) will return to Witter Field again Friday to meet the Rafters with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.

NFL teams have been warned they could forfeit a game due to a COVID-19 outbreak among non-vaccinated players, and players on both teams wouldn’t get paid that week. That was posted in a memo sent by Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday to all clubs that was obtained by the Associated Press.  Goodell says the league doesn’t not anticipate adding a 19th week to accommodate games that can’t be rescheduled within 18-week regular season. However, forfeits are among the consequences.  For purposes of playoff seeding, the forfeiting team will be credited with a loss and the other team will be credited with a win.

The league says more than half its teams have COVID-19 vaccination rates greater than 80% of their players, and more than 75% of players are in the process of being vaccinated. Nearly all clubs have vaccinated 100% of their Tier 1 and 2 staffs. Teams have appropriate protocols set up for staffers who have not been vaccinated, consistent with the guidance given last April.

Among the other key points in the memo:

  • If a vaccinated person tests positive and is asymptomatic, he or she will be isolated and contact tracing will promptly occur. The positive individual will be permitted to return to duty after two negative tests at least 24 hours apart, and will thereafter be tested every two weeks or as directed by the medical staffs. Vaccinated individuals will not be subject to quarantine as a result of close contact with an infected person.
  • If an unvaccinated person tests positive, the protocols from 2020 will remain in effect. The person will be isolated for a period of 10 days and will then be permitted to return to duty if asymptomatic. Unvaccinated individuals will continue to be subject to a five-day quarantine period if they have close contact with an infected individual.
  • Anyone who had a previous COVID-19 infection will be considered fully vaccinated 14 days after they have had at least one dose of an approved vaccine.

Ohio State has three players on the preseason all-Big Ten team chosen by members of the media. Offensive left tackle Thayer Munford and wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are key members of the Buckeyes, who have won four consecutive conference titles. Other East Division players honored were Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson. The West Division players include Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim, Northwestern safety Brandon Joseph, Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum, Purdue wide receiver David Bell and Wisconsin linebacker Jack Sanborn.
