Rain Event
A rain event last week deposited up to six inches of rain overnight one night in parts of Wisconsin including Fond du Lac County. Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says he lives in the Oakfield and Waupun area where they got 1 ½ to 2 inches of rain. He says while that is normally a lot, but in Van Dyne they got 5 to 6 inches of rain which did cause some issues including some traffic crashes. The Taycheedah and St. Peter area also got about 5 inches of rain, but the event was nothing like what they’ve seen in the Fond du Lac area in the past with flooding. Waldschmidt says the rain did cause some washouts and the County Highway Department was busy for several days repairing the damage.
Critical Race Theory Bill
A bill from Congressman Glenn Grothman would prohibit the teaching of Critical Race Theory. He says right now it is being taught in District of Columbia schools. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says what it is really teaching is that everybody’s lot in life is determined by race whether you are able to succeed or not. He says actually if you look at minorities and immigrants most are succeeding but people promoting the teaching of Critical Race Theory are people who hate America and are trying to tear it down by teaching young people we have a fundamentally flawed society.
Delta Variant Concerns
A member of the Ripon Community COVID 19 Task Force says if we are going to defeat the virus we have to put the politics aside and get more people vaccinated. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says we are seeing the Delta variant of the virus spread because not enough people are being vaccinated. He says if there is any truth to one story the Delta variant spread in Australia through simple contact in a shopping mall. He says if that’s true than we should be concerned about how fast it will spread this fall and winter when we are forced back inside by cold temperatures and the virus can spread even faster.
Drawbridge Testing In Oshkosh
The state’s Department of Transportation says a United States Coast Guard interim ruled allowing for remote operations of bridges crossing the Fox River in Oshkosh is now available for comment in the Federal Register. The interim rule is a precursor to a final rule which, if granted would allow for permanent remote operation of bridges in the city. The interim rule in the Federal Register provides the Coast Guard statutory authority for remote operations in Oshkosh until midnight on November 1st. The time frame the interim rule will be in effect is known as a “test period” to allow testing of remote operation equipment for drawbridges in Oshkosh and public comment on the safety and effectiveness of the remote operation. The Main Street Bridge, Congress State Bridge and Wisconsin Street Bridge began remote operations in April and has been ongoing with bridge tenders in place at the bridges. The current testing of the remote operations equipment will continue through the entire watercraft season.
Twenty In Waupun Prison Obtain College Degree
Tuesday, July 27th, will make history for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, when 20 people receive their diploma and become the first class of individuals in a Wisconsin DOC-sponsored program to graduate with a liberal arts bachelor’s degree. The program is fully funded by a private foundation and delivered at no cost to those enrolled or Wisconsin taxpayers. The school established a branch campus at Waupun Correctional Institution, developed the curriculum and hired staff to run the program. There are roughly 75 persons in DOC care currently enrolled in the program, including the 20 graduates. Each was held to the same admissions standard the school applies to all students, including having at least a high school equivalency diploma.
