Oshkosh Man Involved In Carjacking and Standoff

A standoff in Oshkosh with a man involved in a carjacking ended without incident early Friday afternoon. Police tried to take Richard Christl of Oshkosh into custody Thursday on a warrant for his arrest. He was a passenger in a vehicle they had contact with, but Christl had a gun and pointed it at the driver who exited the vehicle. Christl got into the driver’s seat and took off at a high rate of speed. Police learned Friday afternoon that Christl was at a residence in the 800 block of Jackson Street and they, their SWAT Team and a Negotiation Team spent nearly six hours negotiating with him to surrender. He was safely taken into custody shortly after 6 pm Friday night.

Oshkosh Family Displaced By Fire

Oshkosh Police and firefighters rescued a woman, her two children, and two dogs and a cat from a house fire at 1637 Western Street Saturday morning.  The woman called 9-1-1 shortly after 7:30 to report they were trapped in an upstairs bedroom by the smoke. When police arrived at the home an officer found a ladder in the garage and they were able to use that to get onto a roof next to an upstairs window. The officers and firefighters were able to get the family and their pets to safety. Two of the officers were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation and were released for work. There was extensive damage to the home. The family was displaced and is being helped by the American Red Cross. There were no working smoke detectors. The mother was awakened by the smell of smoke. The cause is being determined.

When they arrived they discovered the man had suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper chest and was conscious. He was taken to the Marshfield Medical Center in Beaver Dam and later was flown to the UW Hospital in Madison. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says there is no threat to the community and the incident remains under investigation. The incident was reported at 10:47 Sunday morning.

New Mexico Men Arrested At Columbia County Wayside

Two men from New Mexico are facing drug charges in Columbia County after they were arrested in a rest area on Interstate 39 early last Thursday morning. Sheriff Roger Brandner says the State Patrol requested assistance in finding a vehicle that was involved in a driving complaint. The vehicle the men were driving had improper registration through the state of New Mexico.  A deputy observed signs of drug use when speaking to 23-year-old Sir Cotton and 40-year-old Ryan Griffin. A search of the vehicle recovered 16 grams of methamphetamine, prescription narcotic pills, commercially packaged marijuana, and large quantities of prepaid debit cards and stolen property. The vehicle was likely stolen from New Mexico. The two were arrested and were taken to the Columbia County Jail.

Major Drug Interdiction Effort

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the goal of a major drug and criminal activity interdiction on Interstate 41, and Highways 151, 23 and 26 last month was to interrupt the flow of illegal drugs into the county. He says by stopping the drug traffickers, sellers and transporters they can remove the supply of illegal drugs and get treatment for drug users. “Those involved were looking for indicators on our traffic stops of any kind of drug or crime, drug running, criminal activity such as running fire arms or human trafficking or other burglary robbery types of crimes that are often times mobile.” He says they were trying to send a message with the June 22nd and 23rd effort that drug activity won’t be tolerated in the county. The multi-jurisdictional effort resulted in 331 traffic stops with 21 felony arrests and 23 misdemeanor arrests.

Air America Bill

Congressman Glenn Grothman says he’s looking forward to sometime over the next few months giving the appropriate recognition to those who served in Air America during the Vietnam War. His Air America Bill has 130 bipartisan cosponsors that also would like to see those who served in the secret airline run by the CIA get their pensions and the recognition they deserve for putting their lives on the line. “Because it was a secret airline these guys did not get the retirement benefits that other people in the military got so we are going to rectify that wrong right now and publicize what happened to Air America.” Neil Hansen of Oshkosh, who served in Air America, brought the issue to Congressman Grothman’s attention. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah believes the war didn’t halt communism, but it may have stopped its spread to other countries in that region of the world.

COVID Dogs And Cats

Dogs and cats maybe getting COVID-19 from us, but apparently they are not giving it to us. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says that was the conclusion of a study that looked at the differences in COVID incidents between dogs and cats in pounds and those that live with us. He says fortunately the pets are not suffering as seriously from COVID as some of us do. “Dogs and cats have been getting COVID from their owners. They cough a little bit, they get a little lethargic but they tend to work their way through it.” He says the street dogs in the pounds didn’t have the same rate of antibodies that dogs living with someone did.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department in partnership with the DNR is offering a new safety initiative. They were able to obtain Kwik Trip coupons that can be distributed while on recreation safety patrols. The coupons are intended to recognize and reward safe and responsible actions of recreation vehicle users. Examples would be helmet and safety belt use, life jacket use, trail stewardship and responsible operation. They can be given out during boat, ATV, snowmobile and OHM contacts. The coupons also come with a “thank you” memo to communicate the intent of the program.
