Sports for July 16th

The Brewers open the second half of the season tonight against the Reds in Cincinnati.  Tyler Mahle (7-3, 3.68 ERA) starts for the Reds.  The Brewers have not yet announced a starting pitcher. Milwaukee (53-39) is in first place in the NL Central, 4 games ahead of the second-place Reds, 8 games in front of the Cardinals and Cubs and 18 games ahead of Pittsburgh.  Cincinnati took 3 out of 4 from the Brewers last weekend in Milwaukee.  First pitch is at 6:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central today, the Mets play at Pittsburgh, the Giants play at St. Louis and the Cubs are at Arizona.

In the only game scheduled Thursday, Boston at New York was postponed because of rain.

Midwest League (Thurs.)

Peoria 5, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-Wisconsin continues their series tonight in Peoraia.

North Woods League (Thurs.)

With the best winning percentage in the second half of the NWL season, the Dock Spiders won their third consecutive game behind a dominant pitching performance from Connor McKenna and a big offensive showing Thursday. With the All-Star break drawing close, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders defeated the Wisconsin Woodchucks, 6-1. The Dock Spiders (30-15) return to Herr-Baker Field to host the Wisconsin Woodchucks again with first pitch Friday evening set for 6:35 p.m.

It’s game five of the NBA Finals Saturday in Arizona as the Suns host the Milwaukee Bucks.  The series is even at two games each as the Suns won the first two games at home and the Bucks did the same when the series returned to Milwaukee.  On Wednesday night, Khris Middleton poured in 40 points as Milwaukee edged Phoenix in the closest game of the series, 109-103.  Giannis Antetokounmpo had his consecutive streak of scoring 40 points snapped at two games but still had 26 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists.  Milwaukee had three other players in double figures as Brook Lopez scored 14, Jrue Holiday 13 and Pat Connaughton had 11 off the bench.  After being ineffective in game three, the Suns Devin Booker erupted for 42 points but his foul trouble cost them a chance to build a big lead in the second half.  His back-court running mate Chris Paul struggled through a 5-for 13 night, finishing with 10 points and 5 turnovers. Tipoff Saturday night is at 8:00 CDT from Phoenix.

On the PGA Tour, the Open Championship got underway Thursday from Royal St. George.

A judge ordered free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman be released from jail without bail Thursday following his arrest on suspicion of trying to break into his in-laws’ home northeast of Seattle.

King County District Court Judge Fa’amomoi Masaniai found probable cause that Sherman committed four offenses: misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass in the second degree, malicious mischief in the third degree — both carrying domestic violence designations — and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and driving under the influence.

Prosecutors did not ask the judge for a finding on a felony residential burglary allegation for which he was initially booked. They have not yet filed charges, but a charging decision is expected as soon as Friday, according to a spokesperson with the King County prosecuting attorney’s office.
