Joan Ballweg Leadership Scholarship Winners Announced For 2021

Madison… State Senator Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) presented her 17th Annual Joan Ballweg Leadership Scholarship to ten outstanding students across the 14th Senate District.
“These students exemplify the role of young leaders in our communities,” said Ballweg. “They all excel in academics and beyond and will continue to do great things as they go on to pursue their degrees.”
The recipients of the 2021 Joan Ballweg Leadership Scholarship will each receive a $500 scholarship. This year’s winners are:
Cristal Garcia, Waupun Area High School, is a very engaged student who is active both in and out of the classroom. Cristal is involved in the Warrior Innovation Center, a student run business, and she has been the lead student designer for community partnerships with Horicon Bank in Waupun and the Fond du Lac Humane Society. In the fall she will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and hopes to major in marketing and minor in Spanish.
Dalene Sherburn, Wild Rose High School, takes multiple AP classes, has been class president for four consecutive years and is involved in multiple sports. Outside of school, Dalene volunteers in a variety of roles teaching guitar to local students as well as singing and playing to raise money for local organizations. When she goes to school in the fall, she would like to be a speech-language pathologist and work with children. (Pictured above.)
Emerald Konkel, Princeton High School, is a well-rounded student and athlete. She has worked extensively in her community to support local organizations, various church events and community-based service projects. She has demonstrated her leadership through her involvement in National Honor Society, Student Council, volleyball, softball and basketball where she has served as captain for all three sports. Emerald will attend the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this fall and hopes to major in sports management.
Gracie Mast, Markesan High School, is an outstanding student who is involved in a wide variety of activities in her school and community. She is involved in student council as Secretary and is the captain of the volleyball, softball and basketball teams. She hopes to use the education and leadership skills to pursue a nursing degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Kallysa Farrell, Adams-Friendship High School, is an outstanding role model and active in academics, sports and community service. She has served as class president and in leadership roles in National Honor Society, basketball and soccer. She will attend Chippewa Valley Technical College this fall to study diagnostic medical sonography in the hopes to become a registered ultrasound technician.
Kayleigh Lent, Adams-Friendship High School, is great at creating interpersonal relationships which is highlighted in how she conducts herself in band, sports and her extracurricular activities. This year, she was named a class officer in National Honors Society, drum major in the marching band and class treasurer. Additionally, she will be a first generation college student and is planning to be an elementary education major with a focus on special education.

Lindsay Mularski, Berlin High School, is passionate about music and has held multiple leadership roles related to this passion. She participated in jazz band, show choir, school musicals, has been the assistant director for the local middle school musical, and she collected over $500 and 13 used instruments to donate to “Hungry for Music”. She hopes to inspire the next generation by becoming a high school band teacher after attending the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a major in music education and psychology.
Mallorie Vissers, Wautoma High School, holds multiple leadership positions in school and in her local church. She is the President of her school’s Key Club and has coordinated and planned various events in the community. She has also been active in her local youth group and took a trip to Ecuador where she found a passion for working with kids and helping them follow their passions. She hopes to return to Ecuador in the future after earning her degree in special education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Peter Freye, Pardeeville High School, leads by example in his school and community. He has served in leadership roles as Class President all four years, and participated in many extracurriculars such as Key Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Leaders Active in Government and Chess Club. I am confident Peter will continue to do great things as he continues his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business.

Samantha Glad, Iola-Scandinavia High School, has exceled throughout her high school career as a four sport athlete including volleyball, where this past season despite COVID-19, her team won the regional championship for the first time in 20 years. Additionally, Samantha worked and participated in student council, DECA and as a swim instructor at the local fitness and aquatic center. She will go on to pursue a degree in business at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
“Congratulations to each of this year’s recipients,” said Ballweg. “You’ve proven yourselves as young leaders and have made your parents and community proud. Your next challenge is to take what you’ve learned through high school and go forward, making Wisconsin a better place for us all.”
