Sports for June 16th

Kevin Durant had 49 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists in one of the most spectacular performances in postseason history, sending the Brooklyn Nets back into the lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 114-108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 5 on Tuesday night. With James Harden returning but delivering little offense and Kyrie Irving out, Durant played all 48 minutes and shot 16 for 23 from the field. He scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, perhaps the biggest shot a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left and the Nets protecting a one-point lead.

The two-time NBA Finals MVP became the first player in NBA history to have at least 45 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a playoff game. Harden played for the first time since leaving 43 seconds into the series opener with right hamstring tightness. He shot just 1 for 10 and missed all eight 3-pointers, but had eight assists and six rebounds while playing 46 minutes.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 34 points and 12 rebounds, while Khris Middleton added 25 points.

The Bucks had all the momentum after winning the two games in Milwaukee, with Irving spraining his ankle in the second quarter of Game 4. It appeared Durant would be the only one of the three superstars to play Tuesday — which given the way he played, may have been enough anyway.

The Nets originally ruled Harden out on Monday, then upgraded him Tuesday first to doubtful and then questionable. He worked out before the game and seemed to be moving well, jogging off the court into the tunnel after his warmup before being cleared to play. But he didn’t appear to have full strength in his leg, leaving jumpers short and rarely beating anyone on the dribble.

Jeff Green made seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points for the Nets, who fell into a 17-point hole in this one after two losses in Milwaukee before Durant carried them back. Blake Griffin added 17 points.

Game 6 is Thursday in Milwaukee, where the Bucks are 4-0 against the Nets this season.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo was unanimously selected to the 2020-21 All-NBA First Team, marking the third consecutive season he has earned All-NBA First Team honors. In his eighth season, Antetokounmpo averaged 28.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 56.9% from the field. This was his third straight season averaging at least 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game, joining Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to average 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in three separate seasons. Antetokounmpo’s three First Team All-NBA selections now trail only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s four selections for the most in franchise history. Antetokounmpo, who was the only unanimous First Team selection, is joined on the 2020-21 All-NBA First Team by Stephen Curry, Luka Doni , Nikola Joki , and Kawhi Leonard.

The Cincinnati Reds broke open a scoreless game in the 10th inning without the benefit of a hit and held on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Tuesday night. Brett Anderson worked seven innings of one-hit ball for Milwaukee and combined with three relievers on a two-hitter, but it all fell apart for Brad Boxberger (2-2) in the 10th. Boxberger hit Tyler Stephenson with a pitch and walked Joey Votto to load the bases. Then he hit Eugenio Suárez with a pitch to score Nick Castellanos, who started the inning at second base. Stephenson scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Farmer. Cincinnati, which has won five straight and 10 of 12, also was outstanding on the mound. Luis Castillo allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings, and four relievers completed the four-hitter. Lucas Sims (4-1) pitched a scoreless ninth and Amir Garrett got the final out for his third save. The Brewers’ Daniel Robertson had a two-out RBI single in the 10th off Heath Hembree.

The teams combined to strike out 27 times on the day Major League Baseball said it would crack down on pitchers using illegal foreign substances to improve their grip and throw pitches with more spin. Neither team got a runner past second base until the sixth inning.

Castillo came in with the most losses (nine) and highest ERA (6.47) among major league starters but had little trouble with a Brewers lineup that entered Tuesday with the lowest batting average and most strikeouts in the NL. He struck out seven and walked three. Anderson hasn’t won since April 17. He struck out nine and walked one.

Cincinnati RHP Tyler Mahle (6-2, 3.56 ERA) faces Milwaukee RHP Freddy Peralta (6-1, 2.25 ERA) on Wednesday as the Reds seek a three-game sweep. Mahle has won each of his previous four starts, while Peralta has given up one run in each of his past three. First pitch is at 1:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In other games in the NL Central the Nationals beat the Pirates 8-1, the Mets nipped the Cubs 3-2 and the Cardinals slipped past the Marlins 2-1. The Brewers and Cubs remained tied for first in the division, the Reds are 3 games out, the Cardinals 4 behind and the Pirates are 14 ½ games out.

The Packers final OTA practice of the offseason open to reporters took place on Tuesday. And not at all surprising, it was missing numerous veteran players, who took advantage of the voluntary designation. But there was one returning starter among the 55 players who took part in Tuesday’s workout, running back Aaron Jones. His participation has not gone unnoticed by the young players, including 3rd round draft pick Amari Rodgers.

Meanwhile quarterback Aaron Rodgers is enjoying his offseason.

The reigning NFL MVP chatted with Bleacher Report as part of a preview of the Capital One’s The Match golf event. Rodgers and Bryson DeChambeau will face off against Super Bowl Champ Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson on July 6. Rodgers, wearing an “I’m Offended” shirt, says he’s been loving his time away from football. No. 12 has not shown up for mandatory minicamp or organized team activities due to a standoff with the Packers front office.

It’s unclear if Rodgers is making a statement to the Packers organization by wearing the “I’m Offended” shirt. Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy recently referred to his star quarterback as a “complicated fella.”
