Sports for June 22nd

The Arizona Diamondbacks snapped their 17-game losing streak Monday night with a 5-1 home victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Besides the loss, Milwaukee also lost the services of starting left-handed pitch Brett Anderson. The veteran left-hander exited with right knee discomfort and is “likely” bound for the 10-day injured list. Anderson suffered a bone bruise legging out a double-play grounder in the top of the second inning and then allowed five straight D-backs singles to begin the bottom of that inning before departing, throwing the Brewers into scramble mode in the opener of a three-game series at Chase Field.  D-backs starting pitcher Merrill Kelly (3-7) allowed a run in the first inning and then nothing more through the end of the seventh.  Relievers Noe Ramirez and Joakim Soria each pitched an inning of scoreless relief  and Arizona had its first victory since June 1. Their skid included four losses at American Family Field in Milwaukee from June 3-6.

Anderson (2-5) departed in a 2-1 deficit, and it grew to 3-1 when emergency reliever Trevor Richards walked opposing pitcher Kelly and surrendered an RBI single to Ketel Marte. After that, the Brewers bullpen was pretty tough, allowing two runs the rest of the way.  Milwaukee managed just five hits while Arizona had nine.

The two teams meet again tonight. The Brewers send right-hander Freddy Peralta (6-2, 2.28 ERA) against Diamondbacks righty Zac Gallen (1-2, 399 ERA).  First pitch is at 8:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday, the Indians shutout the Cubs 4-0 and the Twins beat Reds 7-5. The Cubs and Brewers remain tied for first in the division while  the Cardinals are 3 ½ out, the Reds 4 and the Pirates 13 ½ games  behind.

Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib on Monday became the first active NFL player to come out as gay.   Nassib, 28, made the announcement in an Instagram post.

Reaction to Nassib’s announcement was immediate throughout the NFL and sports world overall.

In a statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league “is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today.”

NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith added, “Our union supports Carl and his work with the Trevor Project is proof that he — like our membership — is about making his community and this world a better place not for themselves, but for others.”
